View Full Version : tuning a call for the temperature?

after posting a reply this morning got me thinking. some of my calls that were tuned in the summer or indoors needs a little more air when it's real cold until what seems the guts get warm . so I left one of my calls in the cold and shaved the reed and tuned it in the cold weather. and it turns out it is my best sounding easiest blowing call in colder weather...maybe i'm over thinking this but i have to think the cold will stiffin' up the reed and make it less pliable in cold weather. I didn't know if this came into play but I got to think it does...since sometimes the tune is decided by the smallest factors.

I'm with ya in that calls can sound a little different from the house or vehicle to the field. As for tuning it in the cold, for the cold, I've never thought about it, because the reed and guts still warm up after a few seconds of blowing; but hey man, if that system works for you, then you're obviously on to something.

I"m with Matt. The call may sound a little different in the cold, but I wouldn't say it is enough to warrant a different tune job. But if it woreks for you then stick with it.

i know after i sat on mine in the truck on the way to a hunt, that when i used it it sounded ok but the smell was a little different...ha ha But really if i tune mine in the house sometimes i have to change it outside, coz the acutics of the living room arent the same as the wide open fields.........................R

My biggest problem when Im tuning my calls is I blow them for a long time in the house I end up tuning them a little too stiff after getting all worked up and blowing alot harder in the house. The next day when you want to send a couple quiet honks at a goose it takes ALOT more air now that your "calm" and not rippen on the call...........

I have tuned my goose call several times this year in the field because of cacklers being around, and noticed a difference from the cold and the warm days. On the cold days the reed was a little farther back then warm. I thought it was just me glad you pointed this out.

Alright, this may get a little deep......... I work in the plastics industry and have delt with many issues involving processing, warehousing, shipping and the effects of the different temperatures during the different seasons. Plastic, just like metal and wood, will expand and shrink with the varing temperature. The different types of plastic used to make the call, i am guessing acrylic and polypropylene?, will also shrink and expand at different rates. During the warm temps of the early season, i doubt the temp has any effect on the fit of the components.... but on those cooooooold days during the winter (given the call was tuned at room temp) when the call freezes with saliva and skoal (ha), warms up when its being worked, and then freezes again after a couple minutes it probably does affect the fit of the reed, wedge, and board. I know there were 2 or 3 instances this past season where i had to re-tune the call on days the temps never broke 10 degrees.
