With 80,000 geese sort of the quota why wont WI extend the season or the bag limit for 2007?

Its all in the Flyway Council. All the extensions on seasons and bag limits has to be approved through the Flyway Council.

We have a metro season but it is about next to impossible to hunt them in the city limits with the restrictions that they put on eligible land.

yeah it is crazy, that all these rich subdivisions have these big ponds and all the geese and ducks sit and eat and get fat all day and you can't hunt them just like me and my buddy went to one today and watched easy 300 ducks and maybe 50-75 geese come in and bomb the place but no hunting i wish that just for one day we could go and shoot our limits there i mean it wouldn't last but 30 minutes but it would be the best hunt i hate the whole" can't shoot a gun in the city"

All you boys oughta come out and hunt early resident season in Maryland. Yall'd be in heaven. 8 per day in early season, 5 per day in the late season in the western counties. 8 per day early season on the shore, 2 a day in late season on the shore

I have been to Maryland 3 times this year to goose hunt. Once in the early season. Awesome hunts.

My nieghborhood has probably 500 mallards in the main pond, and sometimes as many as 200 geese. They have destroyed the pond. Goose crap everywhere. They never leave, of course you wouldn't leave either if a lady puts out 100+lbs of corn a week.

heres the skinny on the WI goose season.. i just went to a hearing regarding the issue. Got the following from (http://www.lake-link.com/boards/forums/viewposts.cfm?Thread_ID=51219)

Hi guys,

I was at the Migratory Game Bird Committee meeting today and got the inside scoop on what our goose season is going to be for the next five years.

Basically, the other states (MI, MN, IN, IL, KY, TN) that harvest MVP geese are getting annoyed at the different season lengths and bag limits each year. They harvest 60-90% giant geese and don't feel that they have a real impact on the MVP geese. We harvest about 50% MVP geese so we can have some impact. However, the recent general consensus of the biologists is that the MVP is more controlled by environmental factors, and that hunting has, overall, very little impact.

Anyway, the flyway council voted to stabilize the seasons for a trial period of five years. The idea was to see how the goose populations respond over a good amount of time. At any point, if the MVP drops below a certain level they will re-evaulate the plan and make appropriate modifications. This insures against over-harvest. Kent van Horn was involved in the vote but was outnumbered by the other states.

The season length for each state was set at an average of what it had been for the last six years. There were penalties for going over the quota in a given year. Because we went over the quota, given this formula, we were looking at a restrictive season. Kent was able to argue that the quota was not exceeded according to the call-in numbers that the DNR has. The federal harvest estimates show that we did exceed it but they are much less accurate than the data the DNR has.

Kent was thus able to give us two options for the Exterior zone. They are:

--85 days, two geese throughout --92 days, one goose for 22 days, and 2 geese for 70 days (limit of one can be anywhere in the season)

Both options DO NOT include the 15 day early season.

Either choice has the option for up to two splits. There was discussion of closing during the deer season, and also during the south zone duck split. That would allow us to shoot into January even if we wanted.

For the Horicon Zone, each hunter will get six tags per year, not changing each year like it does now. Hunters will still have to choose between Horicon or Exterior.

SO, for the next five years we have to choose. The flyway committee wanted Kent to come up with one option that they approved of. He was able to negotiate two options so that he could come back to the hunters and let them decide. Now he is and asking what we want. Whatever one we choose, we have to live with it for five years. Please vote on whichever you would like. WWA will have a poll up as well, and there will be other ways to voice your opinion in coming months.

Kent was in a really tough spot with the other states who wanted us to have a much more restrictive season. This puts us right up there with the last several seasons and still the longest in the flyway. He did an excellent job giving us two choices and he deserves our thanks. I will forward the results of my poll and any discussion on to Kent in a week or so.

My personal opinion, I think that either option is good for us, especially compared to what we were fearing last summer when the rumors started flying.

In Ontario, we are allowed 8 geese per guy per day for the first 2 weeks of Sept. :D When it opens back up around Sept.25 we are down to 3 geese per day,per hunter. :( Come Nov.1st it goes up to 5 geese per day. :)

Supposivly they lowered it so the ''true migrators'' can get through without getting all shot to hell. I personally don't agree with it. Geese ARE GEESE there is still a sh$$ load of them. In October there are so many geese migratin' you could kill 10 limts of birds and you still wouldn't put a dent in the population. Damn ''Tree Huggers''.

Rumor... and I STRESS RUMOR

Here in Kansas they were talking about opening up a special dark season and allow E callers.

RUMOR was also that they would either do one of two things. Increase daily bag limit to 5 instead of 3, or increase the possession limit to include 9 in possession instead of 6.

I hope they do not allow e callers and special seasons. We have enough yea-who's that skybust at everything the way it is. Giving them more opportunities to do so will only hurt everyone else.

I feel exactly the same way. We had a group of guys hunting a field beside us the other day. There must have been 6 or 7 of them. They put out their decoys and they had the x. It was corn, it was cold, and the birds have been in there for 3 weeks or so.

We were on the same bean field we have been hunting all season long. About 1/4 mile away from them. We would watch birds work them, start to do the funnel, and BAM they would shoot 100 yards up as they were starting to work down.

yes, they shot more birds then we did. They ended up with 7 between the 6 or so guys. They must have shot around a box per person. Maybe a bit shy of that. But not much.

The two of us ended up with 6 birds, our limit. And we shot maybe 12 times total. I know I missed a couple shots. But I don't think I shot more then 6 times total to get my 3.

Needless to say we found out why the big groups of birds were skirting the decoys and landing 100 yards away.

I here you about the city thing. I have found tons of geese in the city and they are on fields that are shootable, I even talked to an officer of the law, and he said it would be ok if they werent in city limits.

I hunt in Wisconsin and I getting fed up with our seasons for geese especially when the day after the season closes you see a crap load of geese until about the end of January and the you look at Illinois who can hunt until the middle of Jan. and then Canada gets to just kill the crap out of them and we get to shoot 1 or 2 a day and they get 3-5. I would be happy with three and a hunt that the maybe splits a gives us an extremely late season one that starts in the mid. of Jan. to the mid. of Feb. or something a lot better than we have now. it just sucks. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x
