Alright I'll try to explain this the best I can. I don't know if you are talking about duck or goose but they are basically set up the same. A contest routine is based on a hunting scenario. You first see the ducks or geese at a distance, you call them close, they turn and go away, you then hit them with a comeback call, you call them back and then lite them. I'm not a goose caller so I'll try and explain the duck a little more, but the goose routine isn't a whole lot different. In a duck routine here is what you want --- First a series of hail calls, then some intermediate, then feed call, step up to a comeback, more intermediate, feed call again, a few quacks and a lonesome hen.
As far as the length. Contest routines are 90 seconds long. You will first walk up onto stage and be asked if you want a warmup, this doesn't count toward the 90 seconds. During your warmup a red light will be on in front of you. When you are finished with your warmup you will nod and the announcer will say "For Score" or something to that extent. As soon as you start your first note the red light will go off. 80 seconds into your routine the red light will come back on telling you that you have ten seconds left. You don't want to rush yourself here, 10 seconds is a long time, but also don't try to really strecth it out. Rap up your routine and finish before the light goes out at 90 seconds. If you are still calling after the light goes out you are DQed.
Which calls to use. For goose, no doubt the Showtime. And for duck the Straight Street.
check out callingducks.com they have a ton of usefull information and a ton of soundfiles to listen to to hear how a routine is set up.
If you have anymore questions just post up. And sorry this is so long
