Hi my name is andrew Adams and I am thinking of buying a new gun for next year. My two options are either a stoeger condor or a mossberg 500. Both are max 4 with a 28" barrel and a 3.5 chamber. They are also in the same price range. Which do you believe is the better buy? Thanks for the help

i'd go with the stoeger o/u , didn't know they made it in a 3.5" but if they do i'd get the 1 that just shoots the 3" and 2 3/4 " ... i had bolth and never thought the 500 was a smooth shooting gun , i always had problems pumping the gun { this was along time ago } , the stoeger was my first o/u and i put 1,000's of rounds through it on the sporting clays and hunting and never had an issue ... plus my opinion on an o/u is that it teaches u to make better shots cause in ur mind u know u only have 2 so u'll make it count more ...if u wanna get a pump gun i'd get a remington 870 over the 500 anyday .

X2 on the Stoeger!!! I still have mine and it has also had 1000's of rounds through it. I also belive that only having 2 shots makes you a better shot and it saves money on shells haha. The only problem I had with mine is after about 6 years of hammering away at S.C. ranges and hunting the forarm busted off of the conection to the bottom barrel( the inlayed mecanisim in the forarm stock that attaches to the bottom barrel). I had a new stock made and all is well.

If you are looking for a good gun at a very good price check out the Nova. That is what I have been hunting with for a few years. I beat the hell out of it and it does not quit! I picked mine up at Gander Mtn. for $299 new. It was black synthetic and I just hit it up with a little camo in a can.

stoeger mossberg isnt near as good as them mossbergs jam up to easy and that thumb saftey is very dangerous seen a guy pick one up in a blind hit the thumb saftey shot a hole right threw my bestfriend's leg luckly it didnt hit him

I have actually heard and experienced just the opposite with my Mossbergs. The Mossberg 500 will ABSOLUTELY NOT fire 3.5" shells though. I love my 835 (next step up from the 500 and WILL shoot 3.5's) and feel the top tang safety posititon is about as safe as you can get. Also, it's extremely easy to use and the safety position makes the gun ambixterous (not sure if that's an issue). While I've never shot the Stoeger I have heard it's exactly what you'd expect from an extremely low priced over/under. I've heard after lots of use that the hinge mechanism starts to fail. I seem to remember hearing something about misfires too. Again, I have no first-hand experience with the Stoeger but after hearing about the issues it actually prevented my dad from buying one (and he's about as cheap as they come). The other guns suggested are also good choices (Rem 870 and Benelli Nova). I'd suggest you go handle all of them if you haven't already and see what fits you best.

X2 on the Rem 870. Also the Nova. You can do a lot to them and they still work great.

After getting knocked out of the play-off semis due to a too many men on the ice call, Boston Bruins coach Don Cherry was asked who he'd rather see win the Cup - the Canadiens or the Rangers. His response - "that's like askin' me if I'd rather have gonnorhea or syphilis."

I'd go with neither - find a SX2 on sale - pretty close in price and a much more reliable gun, IMHO.

I agree with you that the SX2 is a much nicer gun overall but disagree on the reliability. More moving parts (any automatic)= higher chance of failure= less reliable than just about any pump made.

Better yet, Buy a remington spr 453/mp153 for half the price of a SX2 and it will function better. The SX2 I bought would not cycle light loads, 1 1/8 oz 3 dr (Before anyone asks) The SPR 453 has an adjustable gas system and will cycle all loads effeciently.

Mine didn't - wouldn't cycle 2 3/4 worth a darn and kept fallin apart on the heavy stuff. My SX2 will cycle pretty much anything except the really light crap stuff, just like it says int he manual.

As for my suggestion, I responded without paying suffient attention to the models (erroneous assumption that it was about semis on my part). In pumps, neither of these will hang with a BPS or Nova in the durability department if they fit you.

Charles Daly. http://www.charlesdaly.com/ Now many people don't know this but Daly never built any guns they where He at first was an inporter. Starting with the Linder Daly's today very sought after guns. Over the years they just imported and then there name was bought. I would guess Stoger might fall to the side since there's alot of entry level priced guns out there. Now look at Beretta that owns Stoger, Benelli, Beretta, Browning..... They have built a reputaion of some fine guns and maybe just looking to get out of the lower priced arena.

The Mossberg 535 shoots the 3 1/2" shell. I've owned the nova and found that I could not get down far enough on it, but was a good duck gun. I agree on the auto having higher chance for failure. Happened to me last year snow goose hunting with my benelli in a muddy corn field. Hunting with a mossberg 935 this year because of the safety and sturdiness of the shotgun. I stuck with the auto because of clothing can make pumping the gun more difficult

i shot a 835 for 6 years and never had a problem with it, but just this year i got the new remington 887 and love it. identical to the 870, but the exterior is much tougher with the armor tech material on it and you cant argue with the price.
