Hey guys,
Just wondered if you guys had a preference on when to get a new dog? I have heard its best to get a pup that was born in october, november so you can start with the basics and obedience during the winter. As soon as spring gets here they can start in the water, have the whole summer to work and be ready for sept. 1. I know one of my buddies dogs was like this and his dog is amazing. Another of my hunting partners has a litter available june 1. Both parents are excellent hunting lines. so I didn't know if it would be a problem being born so late, or if it would just help to wait. All opinions would be great!
Thanks
T

Not a staffer just avid hunter but it is my opinion that is a good time of the year to get one. One of the best dogs I ever had was born 4/15 and did a great job by the end of November of that year. My youngest now born 7/22 is out of FMI's Hawk and is really starting to turn on at a little over 6 months. The key is a lot of practice, patiance and persistance.

I have found that a dog born in the spring has worked really good for me, mine was a march pup and got him in may worked all summer and got him into the field that first fall.....had a yellow that worked out the same way just my opinion.....we had a black lab who was picked up opening day 1996 and she got in the pit that very first day and hunting til the last day she was with us so i guess it really don't make a great difference

Doesn't matter, they all have to be trained...Patience is key, can't put a time frame on success with a dog..
