Is a Timber Rattler a good comp call? I know a strait street would be better but the girlfriend bought me a timber rattler for hunting and i was wondering if i could use it in comps also. its a double reed.

Never blown in a comp, but I dont think that the TR DR is made for the stage. It has potential but with the double reed you arent going to be able to get your highballs in very well. You can try it out, it never hurts to get on stage, but I just don't know if you will get the volume out of it that you would want. Give it a try.

No, you would be better of getting a Smm but the SS is the one best for comps.

like said above the TR/DR doesnt have the volume even in a single reed, definatly go with the SMM/SR or the SS

If you are talking Mainstreet Style Competition...the TR just ain't gonna cut it man. If you are talking Meat Style or Two Man Duck Competition, the TR will hang with the best!!! The TR isn't designed to get the volume and ring that you need for a Mainstreet Style highball to begin your routine or in your comebacks...but it is designed to give you that snotty, nasally, raspy old hen you need for meat and two man comps!!!!

Two different animals......if you are looking at Mainstreet Style Comps = get yourself a Strait Street (SS) or a Strait Meat Mallard (SMM) Single Reed.

Hope that helped!!!!!

The TR is a great call. Bout however, if you must use that call in a comp you must change it to a single reed. However, i would go with a ss or a smm in single reed. This is because you wont get the volume out of the TR it is more of a ducky meaty call!

Another option is to buy a SMM insert and run it in the Timber barrel.

You'll get some of the volume back at less than a new calls price.

Anyone else do this? It sounds VERY good in the field.

I run my SS insert in both my DMM and TR barrel...awesome. I believe Drew (shop man) also does this same deal and has had success w/ it.
