Im about to get my first smh and im torn between a wood or acrylic barrel. What are some pro and cons of the wood?
Also, im no pro so which is better for the amateur, easiest?
wood will expand a very little in high humidity areas. but wood also makes the call a little bit more goosey. i have a SMH all cocbola and have yet to have a problem its 3 yrs old and still as good as new. your second question you could start with another call like MH or MG but id just go with the SMH rather than having to step up later, also acrylic are more rugged than wood as far as durability but its a good choice either way

i got a meatgrinder now, thats a great call but i blew a SMH at the store and its alot easier to blow than the meatgrinder so im ready to step up.
Im confident that durability with the wood shouldnt be a problem, just curious if its easy blowing like the acrylic?
10-4 i love my cocbola one its my go to call all the time. also it blows just the same as acrylic, but then again i love the look of wood anyhow

I'm with Barry on this one. I have a SMH cocabola barrel acrylic insert and it sounds awsome. I'm gonna get the cocabola insert for it. It is by far my favorite sounding call. Wood gives it a mellow goosey sound that acrylic can' t do. Acrylic is higher pitched and has more crack to it. Wood sounds natural.
Don't get me wrong I like the Acryllic too,I own some, but everyone I know blows them, the wood call just is a different sound and has worked extremly well for me. Just my opinion. :) :)

What about ease of blowing the call? Say i learned on an acrylic call and got pretty good, would i be able to pick up a wood call and blow it just the same?
I know you can tune them to your preference, but overall i want the one thats gonna blow easy, meaning takes less air?

ok lets make this simple.......the SMH, wood or acrylic are identical calls. if you learned on an acrylic call and picked up a wood one, they would blow the same other than the tuning, being that you like your calls tuned light meaning less air. my first couple SMH's are acrylic, when i bought my cocbola one i didnt notice any differance in how the call blew other than being wood it sounds a little more goosey. so yes you should be able to blow the wood one the same as acrylic. there will be a little transformation from a MG to a SMH but you should do fine.
hope this answers your question 8)

Hey Hossman, Does the combo of a wood barrel and acrylic insert still make it sound a little more goosey compared to all acrylic? I like the sound of the wood but was thinking of going acrylic insert and cocabola barrel. Any thoughts would be apprciated.

(PaStacker83) Yes, the acrylic wood combo does sound more goosey than Straight acrylic. The wood takes the high acrylic crack out and in turn mellows it out. The wood/acrylic combo I have right now sounds great but shortly I want to have the wood insert for it too.
Wood looks really nice and sounds awsome, but as been said before wood expands and contracts therefore keep this in mind. I like mine, it's my favorite call to blow. Hope this helps. :D :D
