I was wondering what the advantages are of running a reed and a half set up. I am assuming speed? I have a single reed DMM, double reed SMM and a double reed TR on the way. What call would you recommend trying this in or does it not matter. I have an extra set of double reed guts and is it as simple as trimming the top reed in half?
Thanks for your help

the advantage is a completely different sound. It will give you the hold of a single reed with the rasp and naisly hen as a double reed. I ran one for years in a dmm, and its by far the best call to have it in talkin foiles calls. I have tuned lots of guys calls as reed and half that are wanting something a little different or are struggling to make the switch from double to single. It takes some time to get used to and you can burn up a bunch of reeds trying to get it right on the money, but once you are used to doing it, and get used to using it, you will love it I think. Let me know if you need any help, or if you need me to tune the call for you. Hope that helped!

I like your thinking also Tim. It would be nice to buy some pre cut reeds without sending the call out.

I have read that tuning thread before, but since you posted it I read it again. He certainly knows what he is talking about. Thanks for putting that up Tim

appreciate the nice words guys. I don't know about precut, because liek Gabe said, I tuned his st up for him while he was standing there and it took some fine tuning to get it right on the money for him and his air. I know it sucks, but the best thing to do is catch me at waterfowl weekend, or send the call to me and I'll do a video clip for you before I send it back to make sure that's what you want. I tend to blow alot harder than most, so getting the call to your specks is kinda tough without you standing there or telling me exactly what you want. Let me know if I can help any other way. I need to get my butt behind this camera and do a clip on tuning so its easier to follow. I really wanted to do a clip on each duck call foiles sells to show the differences but the collection is thin right now. Feel free to pm me with any questions
awesome in a hedge/acrylic s.timber as well !!!!11

Awesome thanks. That is about what I had in mind. I am going to try that, my question would be if I have a bag with an extra reed is the rubber insert that comes with it for a single reed or a double reed and how do you know. Can you tell by looking at it or just the fit. Thanks everyone

the single reed wedge will be thicker than the double reed wedge. The fit should be snug also. If you try using a double reed wedge, the reeds will probably float on the insert and could move around.

the advantage of a reed 1/2 is forgivness. if your not efficient on a single reed then a reed 1/2 or double reed will not tell on you when you make a mistake, or don't give proper air presentation.
