Thats BULL****! they will let a bunch of people go out and kill geese for no reason, when there are people that will hunt them and use their meat. I think it is stupid that the DNR would allow them to kill thousands of birds like that but they won't give us another bird or two in our limit. They make us pay to hunt them and they are going to let a bunch of people go out and destroy a years brood for free. Just goes to show you how backwards things are. Here is a SIMPLE solution stop putting ponds in the middle of town and stop putting fountains in those ponds to keep the water open. If you dont provide habitat in the city they wont be in the city as bad.

We had the same problem this year on a pond near my house. The city let whoever hunt it, you just had to let them know and reserve yourself a spot. We could only kill our limit though. Worked out decent and the geese dont come back no more....wonder why
Never got a chance to hunt it. But the people who did killed birds with ease..
iowa ....very true and well said, weve got the same problem here. to many subdivisions and to many ponds. thats the first place the birds go after being shot at. why have a refuge when we got ponds :x

I just don't understand killing the embryos, there not the ones that are educated on the spot. I would be all about a earlier hunting season in that area though.

have faith, similar situation happened in my area the local birds were just getting out of hand so our september season went from one week to the majority of the month. and the pond that had the bigest problem most of the residents would let us hunt off thier land, they said we would be doing them a favor :D :D :D

i wish they would open a city bow hunt for geese like they do with deer! could you imagine the birds you could kill in woodbury!! but im sure the anti's would shut that down real quick esspecially in our state. I've heard the reason they wont raise the limit from 2 in the reg season is cause of lessers dont know if its true but i hope the state can think of a different way to handle this problem. like start earlier in sept and go longer into jan! i wouldnt complain with a longer season!

Yeah they close the Resident season here on state land because all the resident birds are in runoff ponds in new development instead of in the refuges where they belong...i think its Total BS....i know that most of the fields are far from being cut in Res Season, but the close the damn water bilnds too, the only thing you could do was there was a 5 day overlap of early teal season and early resident season and now they put a week gap between them so we a F-d if you dont have private land to hunt.....thats ok tho...got some leases in order for next year that are gonna be rediculous...hopefully a flooded corn field, some flooded timber on the edge of the corn, and a couple soy fields.....hopefully everything goes as planned...

i went to silver lake and it was awesome. here's my solution just like what you guys are saying. Have an early season and a longer late season with a bigger bag limit just for that Rochester area. like MNbenelli was saying, why kill geese as embryos when we could hunt them and eat the meat?

you would think all the rich people would want the city to let you kill the geese out of the subdivision ponds so they don't crap on there bmw's and the hummers

If you think just for a second you'd come up with a good answer to Rochesters problem.......
Think of the revenue!!!!!!!!!!!!! An early season in Rochester? The city would be going 10-fold from Sept.-Dec.
I'd be game for an early season in the Rochester area.
The Duck Squad-- opening the season earlier in Sept. isn't possible, the season opens on the first weekend.
Opening the season earlier isn't the answer. Leave the limit where it is. Let us hunt the geese where the geese are!!!!!! They are stacked up in the cities on the water. What sence does it make to only be able to hunt them on the water in areas that they really aren't? Durring the late season you can hunt them on the water in the entire Metro Area. But, you can't hunt them on the water there during the early season? Why's that? Population control isn't the answer to the DNR. Like most DNR officials in every state, they are just looking for a way to spend more money and try and sound like they know what is going on.

We have had the same problem in our State. The State just hired some guys to go out and kill a bunch of them.

Here in PA they are going to or already have passed a law for farmers, their employees or land management professions such as golf coarses permission destroy the eggs and nests of laying geese. Kinda sucks but i can see their point also. Instead of making our seasons better times or limits diferent they do that. One thing they did do for us is extend our shooting ours by 30 mins. after sunset but only for resident season, not the regular migratory season since it is Federal.

Be careful what you wish for. Here in MD the DNR " in all their wisdom" preposed a early season for rez birds. The only problem was it was in July an August. Now I dont know about where you are but here at that time the fields are still in crops, and the Golf courses here, are in town limits. So that leaves peoples front yards to hunt in , but most people dont like that. So let me know how this plays out maybe if you guys come up with a plan that works we can use it :?:

WE got the same gig here in Iowa. They opened up an early urban season around Des Moines, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids for the res. geese. It helps but like you said most of the fields still have crops in them.
I don't mine an extra couple of weeks of hunting.
By the way what is with the outbreak of Herpes in the school!!!!

i'll give an example. here in MN, not too long ago they hired a pro bow hunter to decrease the deer pop. in the metro area. i think they wanted him to kill like 200 or something? they hired him and he got alot and the pop. has seemed to settle a little in the metro. Why not do that for geese in Rochester just have the hunt close to the lake, but be far enough where you dont get whiners. I'm sure you wont have trouble finding people to kill them, Silver Lake is BAND CITY!

IMHO- the best way to to "control" "knock down" the resident birds is to let us hunt them where they are. IN THE METRO, ON THE WATER!. They say on the DNR website that hunters are the best source for controling the population. Well, aparently we aren't doing our job. We can't get the Metro geese when they don't have PHD's after the 3rd day of regular season. All the complaints by the DNR and some people are about the birds in the cities.
Rochester has a huge bird problem now, cause all the metro birds have slightly relocated, and have joined up with the other thousands of birds that are local to MN. Roch. has a ton of birds half the season, but the locals don't go much farther than there cause they don't have to.
Let us hunt them where they are, not hope the birds come to where we can hunt them.
