View Full Version : Silhouettes
I was just curious how many guys run Silhouettes in their spreads or if it is turning to a thing of the past with all the full bodies out there.....Are there particular days you put them out based on conditions and such?

Depends on the day or how big of spread we want to run. They are great when you are on a budget, hauling, or walking in constraint. They are easy to pack in and if you dont have the means of hauling FB's around they are great. killed lots of geese over them but I do feel that they are becoming a thing of the past.

HUNT THEM TOMORROW AND THEY WON'T BE A THING OF THE PAST.
Too many of todays waterfowlers don't remember the days of putting out a rig of sillys and tire decoys and killing your limit. Full bodies are great, but if all you got is a field and time, make some sillys and hunt them. I shot many a goose over a rig of hmemade stuff, Don't fall into the fullbody rut. Ive had a guy 200 yards away pull geese off my 50 FBs with a rig af maybe 200 v-boards, if the geese like the field sillys will work. When you put them out, angle the sun side down to the ground slightly to avoid the shine, other than that, they will kill birds.

Yes I use outlaws too can't bet them for carrying them into a field and they look great to just have trouble when the ground is froze.

We run 90% silo's and kill geese all season. had some foiles prostaff here a couple weeks ago and all we used were silos and killed limits every day. could depend on your situation, but i LOVE them and depend on them every day to kill birds. real geese pro series all the way.

Never count out the "OLD SCHOOL" We got out the sillys and yes even the tires this year. But they worked when plastic didnt.
yea for the past 3 years we have hunted with 2 dozen cheap silhouettes, 2 dozen shells and 4 full bodied geese, we have not had a single problem bringing the honkers to the ground, however, when I get the money, I do want to upgrade slowly but surely to full bodies

sorry silver..but you're way wrong. Those silo's were the deal and that's all there is to it. When you set em up at different angles and step away...awesome realism. Scott's right in this case...don't need FB'S to kill geese...period.

What does everyone think of the big flock silloutes. I was thinking of buying some because their like 75$ a dozen?

We have 2 dozen of them and i personally think they flare the geese. We will only use them late season when it is extremely cloudy and we want a huge rig. Other than that they stay in the trailer

I bought 3 dozen outlaws that were brand new from a guy over here for $60. I am getting some Fb's but i really love the sillhouettes. Me and my brother killed our limit in half an hour with Outlaws. They work great!

we use them mainly as fillers and around our blinds. this way we dont have to contest with the full bodies around the blinds. but i have to agree they are becoming a thing of the past.

I have 2 dozen super mag. Outlaws. We put them out around the blinds and as fillers like kansas said. Lots of times we don't even use them though. I think I'll be selling them this summer. Not because I dont like them, but because the IKC should be an all fb and shell rig by this fall.

We had about 40 out one day and when those things are turned to the side they stick out good and look good but if you are lookin right at em they disappear and that messes with the geese in a good way

I almos always use around 4 dozen silos when hunting geese. I mix these in with about 2 dozen full bodies and 3 dozen shells. I like to use them around my blinds, but I will also put a few in the landing zone so when the geese are overhead and cirlce it appears as though geese have landed and are walking around. The disappear/reappear factor that silos give you is great in my opinion. Just my .02.

i have two dozen bigflocks and i like them, had them for 3 yrs now and hunt with them every time we are out, i like the thin fiberglass stake it gives them a ton of motion also, sometime that is all we use especially when we are in a field with a little water they look good with duck floaters near them, we shot a ton of geese over those silos

yes...I too can attest to the effectiveness of silos....
under the right conditions...YES, they are the TICKET!
and YES...when we hunted a couple of weeks ago with Scott and Longneck Outfitters....we slayed them! they do work...no question about it...36 dozen Real Geese make a fine spread....
I hunted over silos more this year than I ever have before...did quite a few solo hunts earlier this season and for my own lazy reasons I hunted over just 5 or 6 dozen Real Geese....with EXCELLENT results....
don't underestimate the dimensionally challenged decoys....they DO WORK..
for gods sake man....face the fabric side into the sun brother....

I like to use the silo's when the ground isn't frozen. They seem to work real well here in Idaho. We run a mixed spread, 3 dozen Avery full bodies, 1 dozen avery shells, and 2 dozen mag shells and a dozen silo's. It has really worked well for us. 210 geese over the dekes for the year.

I have used them all season, and killed geese. THe firstday we had about 50 out, and killed aour limit. The most recent was 2 weeks ago when the flock flying below us made a hard right and came right to us. About the disapearing, remember when the geese fly over or by and loose sight of the decoy and then it magicly reappears, it simulates movement. Plus when its windy you have all seen the effects of the stakes flexing which causes movement.
Some times I think that all the fullbodies are over kill. Plus the geese are used to seing the same old thing and the same old setups all season long.
Just my opinion.

silo's are some of the best dekes on the market. If you are hunting a couple hundred birds fulll bodies are fine. we normally hunt fields that have 3000-5000 geese in the them, and they come out in groups of 150 -300, so if you don't have enough dekes you don't kill many birds. i own 18 doz. bigfeet, and only used them 6 times this year. as of today we have killed 920 geese, with roughly 100 killed over the full bodies. silos are not a thing of the past, but a great way to hammer birds.

The pre made sillys will flare geese. The ones I use are homemade and hand painted and will not flare birds. I dont even own any name brand sillys.
