Looking for advice on Turkey calls, im an Avid turkey caller tho i havent had the chance to hunt them since i was younger, and i only called for my grandfather when i went, but i got drawn for this years turkey season and im updating my Diaphram collection, just wonderd if you guys had and input on some of the newer designs that are out there, and what kind of slate calls do you use......
Found all my old Diaphrams and needless to say the latex crumbled when i opened them up....but at over 10 years old i didnt expect them to be worth anything today....
Any and All input would be appreciated..

I really like the new Primos diaphram calls with the sonic dome design. They also make really good slate type calls as well. I am using the freak and love it. I carry a box call as well. I wouldn't go into the woods after a gobler without a good box.

Yeah i got a couple Boxes....but you know they usually get better with time...they dont wear out like a diaphram.....i was looking into getting some of those Primos`, but ill have to order them, cause no one in my area has any of thier turkey stuff out yet.....

Justin I would not get the mini models in the diaphrams. They are a bit to high of a pitch I think. Don't sound all that great.

I like MAD and Cody diaphrams. My buddy swears by Butski but they are hard to find around here. My bread and butter call is a HS Strut LI'L Deuce double glass. Also carry HS Strut Black Magic(Alum Call), Knight & Hale Ol' Yeller slate, all different types of strikers, and a Lynch box call. Turkeys are real picky so I always carry a lot of variety of sounds but for the price the Lil Deuce can't be beat. It's like $10 and makes such sweet soft notes. By the way when are we gonna see a Foiles line of turkey calls?

Well first of all, what kind of calls we all like is a preference of course....example-We all love Foiles for our waterfowl calls and I personally have a Primos teal call and a power drake whistle also mad e by primos.
As far as diaphrams, I liek both Primos and H.S. Strut. I generally like 2-reed calls, and some 3-reed calls.
Primos- I have a diamond yelper, double diamond, and a diamond cutter. I believe you can get all 3 in a kit...around $12-$15 I believe. I like all 3 of them alot.
H.S. Strutt- I have another 4 pack of them also. Raspy young hen, raspy old hen, split V and something else. I like the Split V alot. IMO, they make the H.S. Stutt mouth calls too large. They're almost to big for my mouth. I like how they blow and they almost seem to kinda cut the air off themselves, so I think they're good for beginners. I dont know how to explain it but they're just easier to blow.
My go-to mouth call is def. the Diamond Yelper.

They cost a little more, but give Woodhaven a try and I think you'll be really happy. We all spend lots of money on custom goose/duck calls...why not do the same for your turkey calls??

I concur with Redlegg. But IMO, the call makers that do all sorts of calls like waterfowl, deer, turkey and predator ARE NOT the best call companies. Excluding Primos, I think the most successful call makers are ones that focus on only one aspect. Foiles....Waterfowl H.S. Strutt......turkey calls
Primos does make some good calls in all categories. I used to really like my wench duck call, until the insert fell out. Then I just got a TR...I'm glad I lost it.

( Justin )Primos piggyback series(diaphrams), I used the green one alot last spring and had outstanding results. Highly, highly recommend all of them. Work absolutly awsome. They all work well,I own them all but the piggyback triple reed is somewhat difficult to use compared to the rest of the line. Hope this helps. :D :D :D :D :D

For a mouth call you can get anywhere I would go with Quaker Boys Old boss hen, if you have a smaller pallet like me I prefer Hooks mouth calls you can get them through Midwest turkey supply. Slate call I like Williams Custom calls slate you can order them from Alex's website, can get for around forty bucks, its a custom call yeah it costs a little more but his slate over maple with a maple striker is user friendly and sweet sounding.

As far as brands and models go, you'll have to figure which you like on your own. They all work fine. The bottom line is that you should have a few different types of calls with you. I know this statement goes against my "keep it simple" philosophy; but, I've found that spring gobblers somtimes get a little picky in terms of reacting to a given call on a given day. When I go into the woods I'll always bring a box, a slate and a couple of mouth diaphrams.
Another one that works well in certain situations is a gobbler call. Two examples: (1) A tom hangs up on you from 100 or so yards out; continues to gobble, but won't come in. If you gobble right after you yelp, he might come charging in ready to fight over the hen. (2) A gobbler call is also a great locator before sunrise when they're still on the roost.

5!!! We can only get 2 tags here.....I've killed one tom each year for the past 4 years and got 2 the year before that. I seen to kinda give up after I get 1.

Another good trick on to use if a goobler hangs up is to try an turn your head around and call behind you. Makes it sound like the hen is walking away and can pull the gobbler closer. If you are hunting with a partner you can have your buddy back up 50-60 and call and it works same way. Alot of people turkey hunt in Ohio and I try not to use a gobble call to often out of safety. But on private land I've seen your technique work great.

I am currently on the Cody Turkey calls pro-staff... i have been turkey hunting since i was 14 and it's my favorite thing in the hole world to do... i like nothing more than killing turkeys!!!... so, in my finding i stumbled across Cody calls at a trade show in PA... i now have three of their slates and many of their mouth calls... their slates are by far the best sounding and easiest to run that i have ever found... check out their website and try to get your hands on some of the calls they offer... you wont be dissapointed, i promise... TedB-
I got Drawn For Blackbird Forest, literally 10mins from where i live, ive been out there a few times watching defferent fields in the morning, and evening to see if could see some birds through a spotting scope, binoculars, hell even my camcorder....nothing, dunno if theres even birds there, ive talked to a couple locals that have hunted there before and they said yeah theres birds, you just have to know where to look, but they obviously wernt giving up any secrets, so i will put in my time and do my homework, and see if i cant spot something, my Grandfather has 30 acres behind his house, all woods, and he said for the last 2 years right around the beggining of spring hes been seeing turkeys behind the house, around the feedbuckets for the mules, so, i think if the public land idea is a bust.....i at least have a backup plan, and yeah NJ is always nice for turkeys, i shoot sporting clays in NJ almost every weekend weather permitting, and there loads of birds 10 mins across the bridge, and ive heard stories of HUGE easterns in the area....so they are here, just gotta find them......

Thanks Ted,
I have gone to the MD line a couple times off Blackbird forest RD, and i start my scouting there and head back towards DE, i figured the best place to find them was were i cant hunt, lol, ive heard they are funny like that, like if you have permission to hunt one side of a fenceline, the birds will always be on the other side, i dont know much about turkey hunting, only what ive seen on tv, and i always play with my diaphrams when i show comes on to mimic what the guys on TV are doing, but im always willing to learn something new, i cant wait to get out there tho, and try my hand, i hunted the McKay Tract, over in Port Penn, in the middle of Spetember, and while i was sitting in my deerstand i had 8 hens walk right under my stand, it was the first time ive been that close to wild Turkeys here in DE, and i was so excited i went home that night and enterd the lottery online, i still cant believe i got picked, i know a couple guys that enter everyear, and are hardcore Turkey guys in NJ, and they never get picked, beginners luck i guess.....ill take a wack at it, and see if i cant get lucky.....
i appriciate all the info, and all your guys imput......i learn something new everytime i get on here...

Sean is right...cody calls are sick. They are a little more expensive, but the quality is well worth it. If it's a diaphram you're lookin for, look no further then Mark Drury and his M.A.D diaphrams. I like the VENOM 2.5 reeds. Awesome call.

Go with the Cody if you are looking for a slate or glass call. The Lil' duce is also a good call and they are cheap too.
As far as decoys, i use Delta's, which is who makes the Cabelas brand and I have a B-Mobile.... that thing is great!
Good luck man!

Woodhaven, I got a fridge full of um. the V3 (3 reed) is a great all around call, not super raspy, if you want rasp go with the hornet (2 reed), another one of there calls I like is the copper head (3 reed), the red wasp is nice to, just like the V3 but has a little more rasp. I use the jim polard signiture series mouth call from woodhaven to get shock gobbles during the mid day period but it is to loud for my liking. They cost a little more than primos calls but they are diffinitly worth it. Great calls!

Justin,
I'm no tukey expert but I picked up a Mountain Hollow and could call with it after two days, having never even picked one up in my life. They are easy to call with and sound good. I got the brown model. I also like the Quaker Boy World Champ. And if you're looking for Turkeys in MD, look at Millington Wildlife, the Barkley area, and Dorchester county. All three are good spots. Dorchester is blazin ,but most is private land. I'll try to get you a hook up on my farm.
