Early season in Minnesota starts this Saturday already!! I am really excited and have been getting everthing ready and doing a lot of scouting!! We have three sweet corn field that about 750 geese have been spreading out and going into. Two fields are in the same section and the other one is in the section next to it. I have a few questions that i would like answered to help my group on opener:

1. Should we set up in the field they fly over first or the field they have been going into the most? The field they fly over first only a few geese have landed there but the field they go to the most is the last field they would fly over.

2. Now i cant decide on the decoy set up. How many should i use, how many lookers, actives, and feeders? And what kind of spread? I was thinking about 18-22 decoys with a few lookers, half actives and half feeders. But i have noticed when a flock is about to land most of the geese in the field has there head up. Should i have more actives than feeders?

Thanks to anyone that reads all this and takes the time to answer my questions! Once again thanks a lot, Poodidly

i would go to the field they are landing in most, thats the X. consider also how much other hunting pressure might be around as someone might pass shoot them and screw them all up.

id run decoys in family groups with at least 2 heads up per group to look like adult birds. mixing in lessers would help add to this. id run groups of 6-8 decoys per group and probably keep it under 2 dozen total.

most important thing sometimes is following your instincts and having fun.

Well there is another thing to consider also. Are you the only group hunting? If so get right under them.No need to try to run traffic if you have the X. Decoy wise use whatever you want, they are going to that field anyways so it shouldnt matter. If its got some stubble id use a few more lookers since they show up better in stubble. Goodluck dude!

I would mirror the geese. Put them to bed tonight. The next day put the exact same spread you see them doing. And in the exact spot too. Also that way you can also see if other guys are setting blinds or Scotia-g your birds.
