It took me one hunt. ALOTT of locally banded birds in our area. For my first duck band it took a year and it was on a Drake Mallard.

6 years and I still only have one. I hunt with a guy that always seemed to shoot the banded birds that we came across, which is not many, but whenever one was shot he always "Shot" it. He became my inspiration when I decided to put a name to my Lanyards.

i dont understand how some people have lanyards full of bands and some people hunt 20 years and never kill one.

It all depends on if the banding department decide to band birds in your area. If they didnt band any bands locally in our area we wouldn't get nearly as many during the season.

Everything I've been told about bands is they are like killing a trophy deer. I've been deer hunting on and off for 20 years and still haven't got that trophy buck. I was told to expect the same thing about duck hunting. Although, it would be really nice to get a band in my second season of waterfowling..my luck I'll end up hunting with "that guy" that shoots the bands all time...ha ha

the third bird i ever shot was a banded drake redhead. the band was so worn i couldnt read the numbers so i havent called it in. i wish i could find out how old it is. that was about 9 years ago. since then i've got 9 goose bands and another duck band (drake mallard).

I have been hunting waterfowl now for 40 years. Have only 2 duck bands from a pair of mallards that my father killed the last year he hunted. Called ducks and geese in for guys who dont call at all and had them kill banded birds right next too me!! But the two bands I have I will prolly pass on too my 2 grandsons. Who knows maybe this year I might get a few!! Later, BUBBA DUCK

30 years ago when geese were scarce just about every goose was banded here. 2 coffee cans full of em. Back then there were loads of neck collars also. Then as the population grew my odds went down. Last year 14 goose, 2 neck collars and 3 duck. For some reason we hit the mother load of neck collars on a golf course a few years ago. That golf course never yeilded a band or collar again.

Don't feel too bad fellas. I have been duck and goose hunting for 15 years, not counting the prior seasons befor that were "schooling" for me and had to have my dad or grandad go with me before I was 16. I have killed 3 bands, thats right THREE banded birds. BUT I have killed countless birds acrossed this gread land that were just as special as the ones with the small piece of alluminum wrapped around their leg or a piece of split pipe apon their neck.
Not knocking the bands because they ARE special. I would challenge some of you do try what I am starting, killing 1 of each of the N. America's duck species. The whole band thing is just getting a little over hyped I think. JMHO

JMHO I need 7 species to complete that. 3 in Alaska and 4 in Texas/Mexico. As for bands in my 28 years of hunting I have shot alot of duck and goose bands. I'm in a area where there are alot of banded birds.

I live in the same area as Dahmer and in my 30 years of waterfowl hunting have never bagged a banded bird. I have only seen 2 banded birds in all that time. Both taken by some one in my hunting party. I have never hunted Saginaw Bayo maybe that is where they all are at.

As my Grandfather used to say "Can't eat them horns, son" or in this situation "Can't eat those bands, son"
