What would you rather do when you got a medium distance cripple......would you.....?

A: Chase said bird down, and use the dive and tackle method, finished off by ringing the gooses neck...?

or

B: Run till you can see the bird.....and just shoot it in the head.....

Now This oughta get good.........

If it's on land I won't waste another bullet. Most of the time I'd let the dog get it though.

Yup I tackled me a crippled honker in Illinios 2 weekends ago. My uncle chased it for a while and then said somebody get a gun. I showed him....tackled and rang the neck.

More in the air---shoot it

and waste a perfectly good motion decoy?

If there are birds in the air your shooting will scare them more than leavin him be will. And if the birds are several hundred yards away chasin em down really doesn't scare them either. Just my opinion from my experience.

its so fun chaseing em around fields. except one time i was going out to get a cripple and luckly i brout my gun cause the thing got up and started flying like 10 ft off the ground. let me just say it didnt get to far. but iowamigr"8"er tackled a goose in colorado, and right before iowamig"8"er tackled it, the thing let out a spit not. it was probably one of the funnies things i have ever seen.

shoot it. I am used to pheasants, you cant chase a pheasant they are to damn fast. So you shoot them in the head as quick as you can.

He said medium distance away and I want to decrease my chances of losing a cripple if I can. I do like the motion decoy take though.

I am mixed on this too, as much fun as chasing one down and tackling it is, it is a lot easier just to shoot it in the head and call it a day.

PaStacker83
02-07-2007, 05:50 PM
Shoot it in the head, I tried chasing one down last year and left my gun in my blind, needless to say that was a bad decision. I was running around like a lunitic for 10 minutes cause it could kinda fly then land 40 yards away. Finally got it but boy was that a pain in the a$$. So now its shoot as soon as you can when they are crippled although tackling is kinda fun.

We are only allowed 25 shells on our refuges here in Cali. Its best you try to tackle them before wasting another shell, although, if its a greenhead than i will waist a shell or two.

I never waste time chasing. If theres more ducks or geese coming in and theres a cripple i lay him flat.

Goose Getter
02-21-2007, 08:58 PM
I always tackle and ring there neck. It's cheaper too. My buddy and I shot a couple snows one day and I went and picked one up and he went to get the cripple. I didn't know it but he's scared of geese so he shot it from about 3 yards. Let's just say that it was no longer edible.

I bit a few mallard heads this fall. Make sure you use your mullers though. Otherwise, you'll hurt your teeth. It hurts a little no matter what though.
