View Full Version : Any Plans for Cheaper Calls

Just curious if FMI has any plans of making a cheaper call for kids. Something that a Delta or DU committee could buy a couple hundred of for a few bucks a piece for their youth days, youth hunts or anything else youth related. I realize that Foiles Calls are of the highest quality (I would not own as many as I do if I did not feel that way). I just think it would be great to have something like that if it was cost effective for FMI and the quality was high. I know some of the other big names do some mass producing for these things. Just wondering if it has ever been considered by FMI?

Of course USA!! Just was not sure if it was possible or considerred. I'd rather pay $20 per call being made in the USA to $4 from China. That is why I am probably going to the DSDs.

I can't really see it as a positive move for FMI - they've worked hard to establish a reputation for quality and a certain 'sound' - if you get any less expensive there is an almost certain likelihood that quality and sound will be degraded. While on one hand an argument could be made that if a bunch of greenwings start on foiles they may stay true to the brand as they grow in the sport, the other side of the coin could be that they remember the 'cheap' call they started with, they remeber that it never really sounded all that great, and they look for another brand as they grow...

just my $.02 regards

Thats exactly what I am getting at. I would not want them to do it if the sound quality was lost. That would be a bad move.

PorkChop,

You do have a point; however, you don't see Rolex making $20 watches with Timex internal parts.

It kills me, but I let my 2 & 8 year old use what they whant. Even my 2 year old grabs a HIGH DOLLER CALL time after time. They whant to sound like daddy & they think they can & think they are.THATS COOL 8)

I let my kids blow all of mine except the showtime. They loved the DMM.

I think the Poly Legend is about as inexpensive a call that you can mass produce and still have it deserving of the FMI name.

My personal opinion is the same for calls as anything else. Start the kids off on the best you can get them. If they dont learn with good equipment they will always feel behind because their equipment cant perform up to their own ability.

Could have bought my son a cheap motorcycle to learn to race, F that...bought him a Honda so he can learn to win. Same goes with calls.

I agree with starting the little ones off with the right gear. Just be careful that your 9 year old doesn't run down the block and trade your SMH for a Sponge Bob doll.

sometimes you gotta pay to get results and for three years I have just bought foiles and these past 3 years have been my best seasons. don't know if it is good luck pieces or what. plus it make you want to get out more scout, practice, and do what ever it takes to make the next year better than the next. I use it as excuse to take a road trip to somewhere on the weekends and have got my girl to going with me. and it has got her to to enjoying waterfowl watching and scouting. I don't want to sound like I am trying to throw a sells pitch, but thats my opinion. keep it between the ditches ya'll

There are several call makers out there that don't charge big bucks for their calls and have been successful doing it.

DC
Gardner
HS

All have good calls that are inexpensive. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a call to kill birds. The poly calls will produce birds.

never understood why everyone HAS to have the "high dollar" calls.

Not my problem though.

I believe that you get a better quality call for the money. Keep the price high. People will pay for quality. If I bought a molded hph, i know that I would not treat it the same as opposed to high priced acrylic. Because i paid 130 for it, it carries that value. Not to mention Foiles lifetime guarantee on the acrylic which is unbeatable!!!

That plus IMO poly carb calls just dont sound as good as acrylic. I feel that overtime the ploy carbs get worse as far as quality of sound. I have went through plenty of cheap calls and finally got tired of it and bought a Foiles. Never had a problem but I know if I do Jeff is there to back you up. Frankly I like that Foiles doesn't as many cheap calls as others. I say that because when I look in a call case and see Primos, HS, Buck Gardner, etc. I get the feeling that they are just more expensive versions of they polys. They are all great manufacturers but there are advantages to having call be expensive.

I started with a HS goose call, and a mick lacy and a Knight and hale duck call, I also got a buck gardner canada hammer, the Buck gardner I took back and traded in for a SMH and the rest of them might as well be thrown away cuz they pale in comparison to my foiles calls. I have two calls on my lanyard that aren't foiles, one is a drake whistle, the other is a DR-85 which is a cheap poly call but it sounds better than any other poly call I've had. I don't spend money on high dollar calls just for the sake of doing it though, I've blown most every call in the case at cabela's and I buy what I'm comfortable with and what sounds good to me, because everyones calling style is different. Learning to blow a duck or a goose call is hard enough without having to try and overcome a calls shortcomings as well as your own inexperience, and its easy to get discouraged when the sounds your're making on a cheap call sound like someone jumping on a set of bagpipes, and the same sounds produce genuine bird on a quality call.

I buy acrylic calls for the appearance and only the appearance. I have seen many poly calls that sound as good as acrylic. If you doubt this have Biggie, Hunter, or Wade blow a cheap call at you and see if it doesnt sound ducky... In fact, if you had them blow a poly and an acrylic side by side, they would sound so close you would not be able to tell them apart... unless you saw which call they were blowing at that particular moment....

I wasn't trying to start an argument on Poly vs. Acrylic. I was simply stating that you CAN kill birds with Poly calls. I own 4 acrylic calls and 8 Polly calls. All calls have their place.

Just cause the call cost you $130 or $200, doesn't mean that the call is "the best".

The whole point of this thread was to know if there was plans for a cheaper costing call for things like youth hunts and stuff like that. Don't know of many youth hunts where each kid gets a 150 SMH. Go back and read my first post. I was asking if it was possible without loosing the quality. It was a simple yes or no. It was not meant for every Tom, Dick and Harry to debate with your opinions or to tell the world your history of what you started with and why you feel what is the better material. It was directed to FMI as they would be the ones in the know.
