I was looking for some experience from guys who have done out of state hunting while taking their prefered gun of choice WITH them instead of barrowing or renting one. I'll be leaving from Sacramento and arriving in Utah. The air line is Delta. I have my Benelli hard case and was just thinking of throwing a padlock on. Like I said, any previous experience inputs or ideas that may work better to avoid having handcuffs put on and a gun point in my direction, LET ME KNOW!

I would use a better case, your going to need a lock. I use either a Pelican case or a golf club case. The golf club case is nice since it has wheels. I just put my gun in a field slip, then toss all my hunting cloths, boots and junk around them. Show up at the airport early, go to the check in, from there tell them you have firearms. There going to have to get a handler that has the firearm inspection cert. Generally they take you in a backroom, unlock your case, pull your gun out and prove that it's unloaded. They tag it and then place a wonderful orange tag on the outside after you lock it.
You are allowed 15 pounds of factory ammo. If your not to far from a customs office call them up, find out a good time to stop by, they know when there going to have to inspect large amounts of cargo so they should give you a slow time to stop by, go there and get a firearms customs tag. You will need to bring your gun over and they will give you a cert that it's your gun. It can be handy but not needed for US travel. If you go out of the country your going to need one and they last for as long as you own that gun.

Make sure you disasemble your gun in the case and there is NO ammo with it..
Where you hunting in Utah.. We are close to goose hunting till the end of October and the ducks are pretty slim right now...Not to get you to excited..
Really where you hunting?

You will need to lock it and needs to be in an airline approved case. They will have you fill out a card when you show up. Make sure its unloaded and you will not need to disasemble. No problem. Done it several times.
