My wife and i want to go on a road trip for vacation this summer out west. I love groundhog hunting and want to do some prarie dog hunting. Preferably somewhere where i can shoot well over 700-800yards. Do any of you guys out west or midwest know of any ranches that have open hunting for these. I havent gotten to look online for different locations yet or ranches that offer this. I was hoping one of you might already know of or have access. ANy help or ideas are appreciated.

My brother just moved back from Wyoming last May. He lived north of Cheyenne about 2 hours. There were prairiedogs everywhere. He used to hunt them every once and awhile. Just a suggestion to look in that area. Next time I talk to him, I will ask him of any specific contacts for you. Nice area to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. I love my trees here in Michigan!

My dad has a .243 for coyotes, Its a pretty nice round. However I am fairly partial to my 22-250 for yotes. We are thinking about doing some prarie dog hunting in the years to come. Ive heard of alot of people using the 17hmr on them and they just slay um'!

Let me tell you the 17HMR is a hot little round that shouldn't be over looked. I just picked up a savage 17HMR a few months back and it is a sweet gun. I mainly use mine for coon hunting. If you use it for yotes though, I would advise you to have shots inside 100yds and try for a head shot. Migrator00 took a buddy of ours 17 down to texas a year or so ago and it put a hurtin on the prairie dogs.

well for the range i like to shoot the 17 just isnt enough, either is the 22-250. Not saying anything bad about the 17 or 22-250. Last year my buddy that i shoot with shot a groundhog at 804 with his 22-250. The only problem is trying to fight mirage and wind with it. My .243 kicks less than most if all 22-250's cause of its weight. plus i shoot a 95 grain VLD match bullet so i got decent weight for wind. I was thinking of goin to colorado for a trip so i could go do some p-dog hunting and check out stillwater outfitters. It would be over this summer of coarse so no goose killin  . Anyhow keep comin at me with ideas, i dont know much about the midwest.
