I have been blowing a SMH all kokobola and need to know do you bring your toung up to get the read to pop or do you cut off all the air in your throat because the way the cds and video sounds you leave your toung down and cut off the air in your throat. Also any help on how to get started in comp. calling in CO would be appreciated.

Tounge DOWN for the hole thing. You need to cut it off with your throat, also your calling should roll together. The best thing out there to teach you how to use the SMH is the Calling Geese 2.0 DVD.

Slayer - You are right in both cases. Just depends on which camp you go with so far as cutting the air off. Personally I think I sound crisper when I push my tongue up to the top of my mouth then when I cut it off using my throat. I also find it easier to hit crisper fast clucks using my tongue. Try both ways and see what works for you. :)

I toook the advice of leaving the toung down and can get the reed to pop. However when I record my calling it does not sound like any of the instruction tapes or videos. Why? Also how do you get in a good clucking rythm because I either go too fast or continue to repeat 5 to 6 notes over and over again. Any help appreciated.

Practice, practice, practice.

You'll be practicing your normal deal and something will happen and it will just click. Thats how it works with the short reed. Try different ways of holding your hands, different air pressures ...dont be afraid to try something different.

No one picks up a short reed and makes goose music right away. I've been on one for 5 years and still learn new stuff all the time.

You have gotten some great advice already.

Slayer - Your not going to sound like a calling video or cd. Every goose call and goose caller is tuned a bit different. We all sound different so learn to be comfortable with how you sound and don't worry tyring to sound like someone else. You will also find a difference in recording devices. I know if I try and record my SMH on a computer it cracks over every time unless I am a few doors down.

When clucking try this, have someone say a number or think of a number between one to ten. Blow that many clucks, then switch the number to at least 3 different and blow that many. Keep going until you train yourself to blow a differnet number of clucks every time. Then work on long clucks to break up your routine or throw in a few throaty clucks here and there. Keep at it and just try and switch it up as much as you can.
