Went out Saturday morning for what we hoped would be a quick hunt. I had done zero scouting, but heard reports of "a lot of birds flying at 7:15". We were out there ready to go and my contact was right, there were A lot. A lot of mallards.... And season is closed.
We stuck it out as we knew there were geese roosting in the area. The only thing we didn't know is what time they flew out, and what direction they were going. We were gambling. 9:30 came and went. We saw a couple small groups get up off the roost fly a hot lap around and go back down. Great... stretching their wings and can care less about the food. We decided we would wait another hour. If nothing happened we'd pack up go get some food, maybe catch a quick nap and hit them again in the afternoon.
about 15 minutes later I had the brilliant idea. Lets mess with the waterfowl gods. I'll get up and take a leak, you pretend to start picking up decoys. After all, we all know that the birds start flying as soon as you have your pants down ...
I no sooner stood up when the geese came off the roost... I ducked in, and 10 minutes and 5 shots later we had our 6 on the ground. My first shot dropped 2 birds, and my second dropped my limit. A new first for me... a 3 bird limit with my 28 gauge Over / Under.. without reloading. :P
Here are the pictures of my limit. My Hunting buddy was nursing a pretty severe hang over so he grabbed his 3 and bolted home before I got pictures.
Here they are just thrown in the back of the truck... a little bit of brotherly love....
