Pro Callers Definitions of a Train Off CDC.com

Kyle Rinella
'Simply a spit note with buzz in it. Used by geese while in flight. Mainly used as a come back call, and in the low end. Emphasize tone and volume where ever it is placed.'

Kelley Powers
'Basically a spit-moan drawn out with a buzzing sound. Just another variation of a moan. All of these speciality moans are duplicated by geese, BUT it depends on which subspecies you are looking at. Generally the smaller the goose, the sharper & higher pitch the clucks, the more buzz with the clucks, and generally more buzz with moans as well.'

Sean Mann
'This is a variation of a moan that sounds “sexy”. It is a “rough moan”.'

Field Hudnall
'The train is again another sound that geese use to intimidate other geese. It is a sound that is used during excitement or aggression, but not to the level of clucking or double clucking. It is basically stepping it up a notch form aggressive murmurs.'

Wade Walling
'The “train” note is a note I personally learned from Keith McGowan. It is a very realistic sound and is difficult at first to achieve on a short reed call. I feel that the “train” note is a controlled scratch of the call. Used as a effective comeback or in low end-finishing work.'

Scott Threinen
'A spit note with a buzz in it. They do this in the air and on the ground. Used to finish geese when hunting, and anywhere really when on stage.'

Chad Belding
'The Train is a difficult note to “master” but it is worth the hours you will need in order to achieve it. Live geese use it while flirting, feeding, and calling to incoming flocks. I love this note when I can get it to flow right. I use it in the field as well as on stage. During my warm-up, I try to throw a couple perfect Trains in to get the judge’s attention. I get my train notes by placing my tongue right below my top teeth just like my buzz cluck. I push straight air through the call while having my hands closed. The sound that a caller gets by doing this is what is referred to as “quality goose sound”. It creates a hollow, goosy sound. By applying more back pressure, you will get a tight flow of air that will produce the Train. It takes a ton of practice just to get the correct tongue placement, correct back pressure (hands), and air flow. The Train will start off with a very hollow sound and then move into a smooth goosy sound. You will know it when you hit it right.'

Fred Zink
'Male ganders use this note a lot to defend territory, food and mate. This is a great note to use when calling smart geese and a lot of calling does not work. Using this note to finish geese is also very effective.'

Craig McDonald
'Making the mouth cavity smaller by pushing your tongue up and forcing air across it will vibrate the reed enough to get what is called the train sound. I have used this sound in almost all situations, as this is truly a goose sound. At times this call will turn birds on a dime if you let them get by you first and then hit them with a train.'

if that dont say it all i dont know what does....hope it help....can listen to the soundfiles on these at CDC...

I think a train is closer to a moan. You can hear it in a pair of geese coming in to land. Its kinda a mellow tone and sounds really good when done right. On the callingducks.com in Big Sean description he says he doesn't know if geese can hear it when you use it in the field. However it is a sweet sounding note.

I was seriously getting ready to type that exact sentence.

Manserface, Sean doesn't say much about the train on CDC. Prolly doesn't want anyone to be able to do it like him, he has a HUGE advantage with his train. Sure others can do it, but nothing like he can.

Thanks for the info dropeminDe. Probably all i will ever need to know about the train note and I did check out the soundfiles a cdc. It may suprise you to kow (as it did me) that I actually make a very close if not spot on train note from what I hear on callingducks. Pure accident if it is close but you know how things sound different when your on the business end of the call. who knows for sure. I'll just keep on honkin.

I basically didnt copy Big Seans, because he didnt really put any helpful information in there about learning how to do it, or what it really was, there was a couple guys in there that i think i didnt copy, but im in NO WAY saying that Biggie doesnt have a NASTY train note, cause his is sick, i wish i could come close to something that sounded that good, but look who hes got coaching him i mean come on........

the one main thing that my post sums up is....

Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, and then Practice some more.....

What the heck are you talking about Miller?

I'm just curious, what makes you such an expert to even make a ridiculous statement like that??

RidgeNelson

The majority of the people on this forum arent "experts", minus the few prostaffers. This place was created to share your views and hunting tips. I'm thinking he was just putting in his input on what he thought or assumed.

Relax gandergrinder. You don't need to jump all over him for his opinion. I haven't been on this site very long but I have learned a lot from guys like killermiller's posts. One thing I definitely learned is you get nowhere by bashing people's opinions. You could have stated your thoughts a little more politely.

Just curious there PA......What exactly did you learn from his post about Sean's train note? Also, I COULD have been a little more "polite", but chose not to.

What the hell does that link have to do with anything? Sure his sounds are "nasty" as you put it........But my comment to Miller was questioning his post. How in gods name would he know if Sean's train note was so far above and beyond someone elses? Because he listened to a soundfile at CDC? A few sound clips and everyone's an expert on who's better at goose calling? I understand this is a Foiles site, but swinging off Biggies nutz must get a little tiring isn't it?

gandergrinder must be a pro. Just kidding gandergrinder. Chill out everyone's entitled to their own opinion and so are you. So let's hear your train so we can see what a good one sounds like.

You boys need to learn to take Gandergrinder with a grain of salt....and by the way...he is a pro!

GG is a great guy with a lot of knowledge to share...but he enjoys bustin' peoples balls for "generalized" statements like the one KM posted :P :P .

All in good fun fellas.....take a deep breath and let it all go.

I don't think you understood what I was sayin he was a pro at.
Or maybe you did?
It is all in fun. If he don't want to share his great train sequence that's up to him. Just wanted to hear a good one. If your gonna bash someone you should at least back it up. Come on gandergrinder let's hear a soundfile.

ok guys, i agree with killmiller but I think he means it like this. ex. - if u had a great fishin' hole, you wouldn't tell somebody the exact spot would you? of course not. Just like the train, if big sean told everyone exactly how he does it, then he would have to be nervous because the guys in the finals can all copy his routine

Richie

If your confident enough in what you do, for example your fishing technique, who cares if you give away your fishing hole.

If your gonna bash someone you should at least back it up.

I'm not bashing anyone here smart guy...........Well, maybe Miller a bit.

Just so you ladies don't get the wrong impression........I've know Biggs for a long time.........Before he was the contest machine he is now........even before he won his first contest. I've poored back more than a few cold ones in many, many different saloons with the SOB. We've even backed each other up in a couple hostile situations. He's been a friend of mine for a more than a few years. So if you guys think I'm bashing Sean, you're dead wrong.

Gandergrinder
02-18-2007, 12:15 AM
Just like the train, if big sean told everyone exactly how he does it, then he would have to be nervous because the guys in the finals can all copy his routine

The last thing he's worried about is someone copying his stuff........If anything, he expects it so and does it himself. Any of you guys ever hear a quiver moan? What about the spit note? The willis? Do you think Sean came up with the train? Buzz cluck maybe? None of this is new material........

Killer Miller
02-18-2007, 05:43 PM
WOW! I come back from the contest and I find this......making a huge deal out of one small comment made about one kind of goose note!

Gandergrinder, please call down. I'm sooooooooooo sorry for voicing an opinion on a forum. My comment about Sean may have been wrong, considering there were a ton of people in the contest that could do great trains (probably why I tied for last with a 210 when the high score in the 1st round was 231). So if someone wants info on a train note, they jsut have to go to different people's profiles on CDC.

I'll be a big guy and admit that I think I was wrong, because it's rediculous how many guys can run great trains now. I KNOW that I cannot do a train and am working on learning, because I want to get into more contests after calling in my first one yesterday. If you can't get info from Biggie (not saying that you can't) then you can get it from another caller.

The easiest way to get to the train is to make enough back pressure til you almost choke it off, then start with the spit with barely enough air to break the reed and buzz your throut like mad. It works for me, and thats how I teach someone when they stop in and ask me at shows.

Killer Miller
02-24-2007, 04:15 AM
SD Gooseman, thanks I'll have to try that when I am on my way to work tomorrow. Pretty much the only time I can call, besides while hunting. My parents aren't too fond of the Showtime's loudness.

I think I got it down, I can do a better train/spit it I put up to the first little knukkle into the call. Anybody else do this?
