I was lucky enough to make it out yesterday for my last goose hunt of the season. I have my son Thursday through Monday and the Kansas season closes this coming Sunday. :( By no means am I upset about the time with my son, just that with this weather (10 degrees) it is to cold for that 4 year old to be out in the field.
My regular hunting buddy Eric met me and we headed out with a light load of decoys. We got about an inch and a half of rain then an inch of snow on top of that. The problem became that this formed an ice layer in the field. Everything below the ice was muddy, and everything above the ice was slushy. This meant we were packing in. As neither one of us has pack mule in our DNA we opted for one bag of sleepers (2 doz), and 2 dozen full bodies. After a hike that seemed like an eternity we got set up.
It was quick getting started, then it slowed down for a while. Then picked right back up.
We got a real eastern Kansas treat for us and had a flock of 5 specks come in and pay us a visit. We had some traffic on the road and some houses that closed our shooting window so we were only able to get 2 down. We were a little disappointed. our limit on specks is 2 a person. The only excuse we had was the shooting window. But better safe then sorry. After knocking down a couple canadas a loan snow came in for a visit, thanks to some bismuth 6 shot he stayed for eternity. We then picked out or last 2 birds and called it a season.
It was a real treat for us to knock out 3 species of geese on a snowed under bean field to close out our season. It was the exclamation point on a good year. In the end, I was just happy I carried the .410 that day. After the pile we created I needed to save weight every where I could.
