I just got a meat cutter and have some tuning questions. Should the reed and tone board follow the same rules as a short reed SMH. Meaning, the farther out the guts and reed are the deeper the tone, and the reed should just fall into the tone channel, without a hang up? Or is it a totally different creature all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have mine tuned so that the reed just falls into the channel like my SMH. It takes some time and trial and error, but you can get it to sound exactly like you want it to, just experiment. Good Luck, and if you have trouble getting it to sound right ], send it to the shop with a note of what you wan't out of it, and they will hook you up. Best customer service in the the industry.

Tuning the MC is a bit touchier than a SMH, but in general follows the same rule of thumb as fas as tuning goes for ease and difficulty to blow. The reed is a bit different in that, for me, the reed does not fit as flush to the top (a small, very little space between the top of the trough and reed) or the sides. I cut my reeds a bit on the sides to get a different tone, and I end up just trying to center it in there the best I can. Once I tuned it the way I liked it, it ain't moved.....if it ain't broke don't fix it.....hope this helps

Thanks, It's a bit of a different creature from tuning short reeds. The more I mess with it the closer is seems to be to getting there. Thanks again the info it really did help.

MarshBlaster, the difference between tuning the flute and short reed is the natural curve of the reed goes up on the flute and down on the short reed. The easiest way to check this is lay the reed down flat on a counter top and flick it with your finger if it spins around like a top the curve is up. If it slides across like a boomarang the curve is down. Hope this helps Johnny McDonnell
