I bought a SMH a year ago and have been blowing it since. It has a flared wood insert and I got it cause it seemed easier to blow. Recently I was watching one of the Foiles videos and heard that he didn't make all wood calls cause they crack in the cold. Did I get ripped off or what is it, I have only seen one other Foiles with it and thought comp inserts were acrylic? Anyone know what it is?

I think what you heard him say is that he doesn't make an all wood only call as in he uses the Metal band and O ring system on his wood calls to prevent them from cracking or swelling so that you can not take them apart without freezing them. Look on his actual sales sight, and you will see he makes wood calls (barrels and inserts. As long as your call has the metal band around the bottom of the barrel, that says "Foiles Migrators" I am sure you have the real deal.

Here is a sample of an all Bois D'arc (Burnt Hedge) from the Foiles Call Gallery

Slayer, you did not get ripped off. The problem with wood is that when it gets wet from blowing into it, the wood is going to swell. As the wood dries out it contracts. Over time the wood is going to split, thats covered under the Warranty of the call but it's a pain in the butt for every one involved. What you heard on the video was from a while back, Jeff never wanted to build the insert with wood because of the expantion/contraction problem you need some type of a insert with in the insert to keep the guts from falling out. But he had to build it due to popular demand, and he uses a brass insert to hold the guts in place. The all wood calls have a awesome goose sound. Hope this helps to clear up the confusion, Johnny McDonnell
