I know the SMH is acrylic and has a lifetime guarantee; the MG has a one year guarantee and is polycarbonate; but, does the SMH sound $90 better than the MG?

YES! It is CRISPER, LOUDER, and GOOSIER than the MG.

That sounds great, but it's still a lot of money. Are there places that let you try one out before buying it??

Everywhere should let you try before you buy. I wont buy if I cant try it out and if the sale means somthing to the store they will let you give it blow.

Both calls will kill geese.....here's my recommendation:
Go to your local Gander Mountain, Sportsmen's Warehouse, Cabelas, etc. that carry high end waterfowl calls. Talk to someone behind the counter about "trying before you buy". I have yet to go into one of these stores that will not let you try it before you buy it. TRY BOTH CALLS....YOU make the decision if the extra money is worth it. That truly is a decision that only you can make. You need buy what sounds good to you...not to everyone else.
Now, if you wanted my opinion on the subject....both calls will kill geese. Both calls give you a full range of sound. The Meat Grinder adheres to its name - it's a meat call. The SMH will give you a more crisp sound and more volume. The SMH will also give you the versatility to get into comp calling should you decide to go that route. I own both calls. I use both calls in the field. I like the sound from both calls....but then again, I like the sounds from all of Jeff's calls.
This is a decision you need to make brother....We can give you all of the advice in the world....but YOU need to make the decision based on your sound from each call.

Like Mark said, they are both GREAT calls, and both will grind 'em up good. However, no matter what we tell you, you need to get out there blow both and make a decision, one of them will fit you.
The Meat Grinder has a different (not bad, just different) tone than the SMH, but that is because of the materials used. However, my cousin made the Meat Grinder his first Foiles Goose call, and those guts are wore and that call sounds really good. But of course, it didn't stop for him there, he has bought a few others from the SM line to be able to handle different situations in the field.
The Meat Grinder is a good call, no question, but you must make that decision and find what fits you best, and if you advance in your calling and decide to upgrade some day, hey thats great, but if not, you will not be disappointed with Foiles' Meat Grinder

Great advice. I started with a meat grinder and it was tuned a bit hard. I am sure one certain person got tired of me complaining but man when it clicked it was like a dream. Thanks to a avid pro staffer I learned how to blow it right and now I can make just about any call sing. :) The two on my laynard now are Foiles SMH and Zinks SR-1.
Take the advice and try them out for yourself and see what you think. Just remember that each call is tuned a little different.

You guys are all right. I've obiously been agonizing over this for quite some time; so, without even trying the SMH, I went ahead and ordered one yesterday (chocolate barrel w/tan insert). As crazy as this must sound, the idea of owning an SMH was more overwhelming than wondering if it sounds better than the MG.
I have Jeff's "Callin' Geese 2.0" DVD, and it made a huge difference with my ability to blow the MG. I'm confident, in the end, I'll love the SMH as well, if not a little more. I have all of spring and summer to master it.
Now it's time to drop coin on more goose decoys. The spending never ends for the consummate "Gear Queer", because remember, in the end, gear is power.
