I am definantly buy a Foiles duck call. I want as much imput as I can before I buy so I don't regret the decision later. We just bought an amazing duck property and am hopefully going to get an oppurtunity to guide over ponds and in fields. I have also been wanting to get into comp calling, but not sure how much I am going to like it, although it has been on my mind 24/7. What is the best call to buy that works awesome in the field and on the stage? Any help appreciated.

i suggest the strait street its really loud if u blow it hard for the comps but its also quiet enough to use in fields in ponds but not quiet enough to use in marshs but i suggest the strait street if u are looking into contests n the places u will be calling in.

Strait Street is your ticket if you're looking to hit the stage. It's a good big water call as well. If you're looking for something a little quieter, go w/ a Timber Rattler in single or double reed. The legend isn't a bad choice either if the TR isn't in your budget after the SS. Good luck brother!

Slayer,

First of all thanks for choosing Foiles Migrators as your call, you will not be disappointed. As far as your situation goes, if you are looking at doing anything on the Stuttgart Style comp calling side of things, a Strait Street will fit you the best. You can compete with a SMM, it sounds real good, but, the SS was made for the stage and will give you a more full sound, ring, and great duck which is what is important on the stage. The SMM has great duck and great range of sound and tones, but the SS has a big full sound and will reach out there and sream louder than the SMM.

That being said, if you are looking for a hunting call, I don't go duck hunting without a TR and Wood Legend, they are the duck callin deal there. If I am hunting big water, I will use a SMM, it is versatile in that you can get out there and reach em, and the call still provides you with the ability to finish em close. For me it just comes down to personal preference, I use the TR and Wood Legend the most because that is what I am comfortable with, like I said, any of the calls can get it done, it is just a matter of what you prefer and what you become comfortable with. Hope this helps...Let us know what you decide...

legend is a great call but for the stage its my understanding that the strait street is the only way to go.

Slayer - How big is this duck property? I have to disagree with a few on here and say that the SMM can do it all for you if you put the time in on the call. Get a competition insert for it and don't worry about the rest. You can ring a SMM with the best of them and feed one for days.

Smoke I have to love your enthusiasm being as that is the only call you own? The double reed legend is by far one of the most duckiest calls I have ever worn around my neck. Those tough don't want to finish, hang up at 70 yards ducks just fall in love with a softly blown legend. I would suggest a wood barrel to make it even nastier and raspier. Don't even think you are going to step up on a stage with a double reed these days. I have seen two people that could take a stugart style contest with a double reed and one no longer works for foiles. :(

I wouldn't hesitate to run a TR in a comp if it was tuned right and had the competition insert in it. :) You guys need to work on the entire range that is possible in a call and quit thinking you need a different call for each and every situation. Sure the SS rocks and you can't go wrong with it either but the TR and SMM will do the same for those that put the time in. :)

Slayer don't even think you will make the first round in a comp with a double reed so you are better off to learn with a single in the beginning. :) You can pick up any of the calls mentioned above on other forums classified for half what you pay for them on retail. I would recommend going some place and trying a few to see what you think about them and to see what you think is more comfortable for you. Remember when you are doing this that the way a call sounds has a lot to do with how it is tuned. Go with a call that fits you and feels comfortable. Take your time and practice as much as you can for the stage and the marsh and you won't be disappointed.

Well to clarify a few things....duck calls don't have a "competition insert". The difference in the SS, SMM, AND TR is the tone boards, barrel length, and bore diameter. I will say that a SMM will ring when tuned tight and it has proven itself of stage. It is a very good call. If a guy is really wanting to get on stage though, a SS is the way to go do to the fact that the stage is what this call was born for. The SS gives you that hailing ring that the judges are looking for. It also gets down and ducky on those lonesome hens and feeders. I think the TR is an awesome call as well, but it's just not made for the stage. It's made for killin' and that's it. It's a meat call and can be used for a 2 man deal, but not an arkansas style contest. I hope this helps ya brother and good luck w/ your duck deal!
