I've been thinking about picking up a flute to mess around with and was wondering if any of you can recomend a good call that's not too expensive?

If it goes well and i can make the sounds i'll look into getting a meatcutter later.

Any suggestions?

IF you dont want to get a meat cutter I'd say get a Big River Goose Flute, for like $35

Do they sound good? I dont mind spending 50-60 if it's a good sounding call. I just dont want to drop $150 on a call i'm not sure i can blow.

i would buy a used meatcutter. if you dont like it you could probably sell it for the same price you bought it for. there is no sense in buying a crap call and then buy another one. i have done that and its a waste of time and money

primos makes a good flute call, I havent blown one but they look like they would do the job. Although I do have to agree with JBO and try and find a used one.

Big River makes a good flute for cheap $15-20. Me and my buddies used them for years and killed many of birds. But if you want the real deal just buy the meatcutter.

i'd go with the meatcutter like JBO said and get the callin geese 2.0 to go along with it. i tried to blow my old big river flute that i started on a long time ago......................lets just say the trash man is waiting to pick it up !!! if your already blowing short reeds chances are you wont be able to blow it. if you can, it might give you some bad habits on short reeds. and if you do start out on an elcheapo and like it, then step up to the meatcutter your going to have to learn it all over again because the two blow nothing alike.

Don't do that Barry. I gave my two old Big Rivers to a friend's kids. He thanks me all the time.

If a cheap goose flute is what you want then the Big River is the way to go, my seven year old can sound good on that thing. I blew one for awhile then starting using a short reed, nothing like a short reed though.

I agree, the short reed is great. I cant wait until my HPH get's here. I just like the deep sound you get from a flute. Also there are a lot of clubs and refuges between canada and the central valley of Cali. Those birds get pounded and hear a lot by the time they get to me. I dont see too many but when i do i want to make sure i have everything in my power to get them within range. I've been hunting ducks since i could walk and i've yet to even snap a safety on a honker! Hopefully that will change this year! :D

Not trying to rub it in or anything, but keep a closer eye on the yard sale. I picked up a flute and a SSS in the past month. If ya can wait, I'll probaly get annoyed with the meatcutter again, (It's my second one) and I'll be selling. But you'll see them up for sale or trade from time to time.
It's a great flute, I would try to learn on one if I was you. Don't hate me because I'm a call hog.

Thanks, if you do decide to sell it let me know. I dont really want to drop that much until i'm sure i can make the sounds. Once i get the basics then i'll look into getting something better.

I'd feal better about it if i seen more honkers, but i only a see a group or two a year if i'm lucky. I get a lot of spec's and snows in my area. but hopefully this will be the year.

Also, i was out on a training mission when those calls came up for sale. When i got back in and saw that you guys had picked 'em clean....... Nice work! :D

I seen that, it's just more than i'm looking to spend right now. Once i know for sure that it's something i will use then i'll break down and buy a meatcutter.

Thanks for the heads up though!

i've only been callin for 2yrs- and i started on a flute-a big river- and it worked great, but be warned, now i'm tryin to learn a short reed -SMH- and i have a lot of bad habits to break, it's to totally different styles of calling

give Tim Grounds' Guides Best flute call a shot. $40 for an acrylic one and it has (I believe) won more contests than any other call.

Poly Eastern Shoreman is hard to beat for a cheap flute.

Now I know this is probaly gonna get me some smart a$$ remarks back, but for the best sounding cheapest flute call there is in my opinion is "Tim Grounds Guides Best" . It is cheap but it sounds good. I have blown darn near every make of flutes and this one for being cheap works really damn well. Butttt...... when you can afford it get a meatcutter they sound really damn good and work awsome. Everyone has a buget and you get what you can afford that works. thats my opinion of course. :D :D :D :D ok the guys on here that know me ,dont cruisify me now!!!
