The wife and i were looking at labs to buy.I'm asking you guys to guide us in buying a lab.On the sight i notice lots of good dogs and we notice alot were males.question(1) what would you choose male or female (2)What colour breed(3) what do you guy suggest me to keep an eye out. in picking out the good bird dog.

male or female i just prefferance, the down fall with females is if there not fixed drop alot in heat. labs are great dogs very faithful and great companions while chessies tend to be higher strung, but will hunt until they drop. also temperments and backgrounds make a huge differance in the breeds.

as barry said alot of it is preference. i went with a yellow female when i got my dog last year out of hawk and dennis taylor's female. i had originally wanted a male but i cant complain with the one i got. u honestly cannot play fetch with her enough. this will be the first season i get to hunt her and cannot wait. alot of my friends had blacks or chocolate labs so i decided ot be different and get a yellow. that and i just like the way some yellows look especially hawk.

are you just looking for a waterfowl dog, or an upland dog too?
Your post is confusing, you say just labs, then you ask which breeds we recommend. It all depends in what your purpose of getting the dog is.

If you just want a lab and cant decide on color it's not going to be that big of a deal.
THe color of the dog doesnt make it a better hunter or anything.
Just look into the dog's lines and find the best hunter and one that fits your needs.

Males tend to be a little more heard headed than females. But that is not always guaranteed.

I prefer females because they seem to handle better to me. When they go in heat I just get an old pair of underwear and a maxipad and problem solved. :shock: As far as color it doesn't matter...I wanted a choclate but ended up with a black and now I'm kinda partial to black.

I prefer a male black lab. I also hava a yellow female.
It's just your choice just make sure you put the time confidence in you're new pup. My yellow female just came into heat today, I am going to have her bred this time.
