Whats your favorite decoy spread for hunting geese. I like the U shape , or small family groups.

Depends on the day...

4 corners defense or The black hole of death are what we run most.

I generally put them out in kind of a chaotic pattern, somewhat looking like an eg with a killing hole infront of the blind, got to play the wind some but it works for us.

we use a "u" or a "j" type pattern

I like the kissing lips. Sounds funny but try it. "J" Hook on each end,Landing zone in the center and right and left. "U" shape out back landing zone in the center. Right and left sides of the blind are open{ Guides zone} Try it and see It works for me even when geese get tough. Set deks in the spread in random. Also try a lazy X Blind in the center 4 landing zones. Try differant spacing and lines. Set deks in a random pattern. I use these two patterns and have had Happy Clients every time.

I don't really have a favorite spread per se.......I run my spreads how I saw the birds in the fields while scouting. Now, when we run traffic...that's another story. We run our "gap" spread with a huge kill hole (50 - 75 yards wide) and a couple of gaps in the spread where the birds can actually pass through/over the spread, without feeling uncomfortable. This has worked wonders for us while running traffic....if the birds do not decoy perfectly into the kill hole...we shoot them in the gaps!!!

I like hunting in all types of spreads. I set up depending on a couple factors. The hunter to decoy ratio and the way the birds are naturally setting. The first one can vary depending on the time of season how many decoys I really want to set up or have avalible. If the number of hunters is large and the nuber of deeks is small I like to set the blinds close and bunch the decoys in family groups(depending on season) and make them relitivly close togeher and make the geese land on the edge of the spread.
I also like the U or J because it forces the geese to land in a desired area.
The best idea for set up has to be conforming to what the geese want. If they arent responding change a couple of things (i.e. calling, flagging, and decoys) to talk um' in to givin up.

scouttracker, when you do the kissing lips spread does it make two holes for the geese then?

JPS, I run family groups only early in the season, when they're actually in small family groups. I seem to run them for the early September season and sometimes in the regular like in October. But after that, Im with you. I like the U or J shape, but have to switch it up sometimes. My uncle is a major goose killer and he has been liking the line. He runs it perpendicular to the wind and is fatter with dekes in the middle and thins out at the ends. He points the tips downwind, kinda making a straight looking U. I think it works good when there isnt much wind to work with. Just my opinion.

every now n then we run a "U" or a "J" but we mostly run a "X" it works very, very, very good its awesome geese love it here in Maryland umm were running close to 800-1000 decoys so its easy to make the "X" pattern
