I spend most of my time field hunting ducks and hunting smaller lakes or big sloughs. Any body have any recomendations for which call I should purchase. I'm currently thinking about a timber rattler. Any suggestions? :?

Its hard to wrong with a timber rattler, by far my go to duck call. Are you anywhere near a foiles retailer so that you could try them all and see which one fits you best?

I would go with the Timber Rattler. It will give enough volume and still won't be to loud for the slough and small water. It you want to hear the calls go to the foiles home page and there are soundfiles so you can listen to each one.You may also want to go to your local sporting goods store and blow each of the calls to find out what fits you the best

Thanks

I hunt a few small lake's myself and i used my SMM solely last year and it was perfect. The SMM in a single reed will give you a good hail call and is quiet enough to finish the birds as well.

Since then i've done some trading and am going to split the duties between a SS & a TR. I get a lot of high birds passing from one island to another and need a loud call to get thier attention. That's where the SS will get used the most and the TR ( the best damn call i've ever heard in my life!) will be the call i use to finish them into range.

Hope this helps!

We hunt about the same kind of areas that you do. A timber rattler will work awesome for you. That call is pure duck. Definitely my favorite duck call. Depending on how good of a caller you are will depend on a single or double reed. I can't blow a single reed very well so mine's in double reed. I've never tried a TR in single, it may give you a little more volume but you can't go wrong witha DR TR. Just my opinion.

Can't go wrong with either the Timber Rattler or the DMM but i would listen to soundfiles and see which one you like best.

I have a DR Timber Rattler, a SR SMM, and a DR DMM. If I was going to go with just one call, I would probably pick the DR DMM. You really can't go wrong with any of The Foiles Duck calls though. Listen to the sound files, and then go somewhere Like a Cabela's, Bass Pro,or Sportsman's Warehouse, and try them out. Then decide for your self which would best fit your needs.

If you dont want to spend much the wood/poly legend is great. But if you want to get that extra sound, the TR is the best way to go!

Jeff, I've also got a DR TR and a SR SMM and will so be buying a DR DMM. I think you've got the reeds per call correct IMO. I would also have to say the DMM. It has an insert hole size that is in between the SMM and the TR, making it a very versatile call. Don't get me wrong, I love my SMM (very loud when I need it, but a damn ducky call too) and my DR TR (DUCKIEST CALL EVER IMO and has descent volume for a double-reed). I just think you get the best of both worlds (volume and realism) with a DMM.....and that is why I'm going to have one pretty soon (Teal/Clear I'm thinking). :D

I'm a Dead Meat Mallard guy myself, but you can't go wrong with the Timber Rattler either. In fact, the TR is quickly becoming my next obsession.
