my buddy sounds lets say "not so good" on a duck call. he calls at everything he sees and very loudly. this is a problem for me because
i hunt in the timber most of the time. most of the time we try and either call over him or just don't call at all. dont want to be rude, anybody got
suggestion. besides leavin him at home lol.

That sounds like my dad when we go goose hunting I give him a flag and tell him to call with that. When we go duck hunting he uses a six in one whisle. Can't say to much I'm not the greatest caller myself.

If he's your buddy, then just tell him the truth, and help him get better. Or else someone needs to take control in the blind and say when, who, and what is called. But I'd tell him the truth, can never go wrong with that. Take him to Jeff's shop in Pittsfield and ask one of the guys to work a little with him.

I KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT. I JUST TELL MY FRIEND THAT THE BIRDS ARENT WORKING RIGHT LETS BACK OFF THE CALLING AND ONLY ONE GUY CALL.OR IF WERE HAVING A BAD DAY JUST FLAT OUT TELL THEM THEY SUCK AND TO JUST FLIP THE FLAG AND SHUT UP BUT WERE ALL PRETTY CLOSE BUDDIES SO NO FEELINGS ARE HURT TO BAD.

I dont remember where I saw it at but when I started waterfowling 7 years ago I saw a article on Blind Eticut. You just need to tell your buddy that he needs to only call when asked to call. Whenever I am duck hunting with my buddies unless I know they are cool with me calling my call sits on my lanyard until they ask or tell me to call. I am a good caller but nobody knows how the ducks work in an area better that the person who found the spot. Now with goose hunting I used to be like that but now I just call, I have learned over the years to read what the birds want and I give it to um'. There is nothing bad about a bunch of guys calling to geese because the more the better...to and extent. But with ducks being a warey bird a wrong note on your call can flare birds.
Work with your buddy, make him a better caller it only takes a few lessons and a little guuidance by a experienced waterfowler to tone down a call happy hunter(wants to call too much). I am call happy sometimes and I have been calling for years. Also I know I am call happy when it comes to buying calls.

thanks for the advise, just worried about offending him (kinda hard headed and 2x my age) gets offended easily when us young guys tell him what we really think, maybe he would listen to my dad. i ll try to help the calling myself until then.

I just tell him to "STOP CALLING DUDE. YOU'RE SCARING 'EM NOT BRINGING THEM IN!!!' One of my uncle's hunting buddies is terrible on a duck and goose call. He also blows them extra loud. My unclle just strait up tells him to quit calling if we think he is scaring birds. HE DOESNT BLOW FOILES CALLS, MAYBE THIS IS A COINSIDENCE, MAYBE IT ISN'T. But I know my and my uncle both toot Foiles and I can say that we suck 'em right into our trap from time to time.

BRUTAL TRUTH works the best I have had guys with me that are much better callers than I am, and I sit back and try to learn from them. The flip side to that is I have alot guys in my blind that just dont call well or simply dont know how to read birds. Feelings get mended easier after a day of shooting alot easier than they do with no shooting and I told you so after the fact.

we have had this happen, we told the person either his call stays home or he does, but we also practiced with him to help him get better

Suskiedrake, I agree with you about reading birds. There are so many people taht just start hail calling when they see ducks, whether the ducks are way off or coming right into them. I think reading the birds is jsut as important as actually soundign like a duck or goose on a call.

Take Hoosier Hunters advice, We told him so many times that he sucked, he eventually had to go get private lessons. HA HA

I've got to defend my reputation! Surely he's not talking about me? I think he's talking about another bonehead guy we used to hunt with. He was absolutely terrible with a call. He'd literally huff into his call  So we had to tell him to chill, we'd let him feed chuckle and that was it. We should have bought him one of those shaker calls that feed chuckle :D

thats exactly the problem he has, besides calling loud and not reading the birds.

Same with this guy, he had absolutely no clue! He thought he shot every bird too. Definitely was not any fun with him :? We finally called him out one day. Me and my buddy decided to pull up and then not shoot on the first round. We called the shot and we all came up and he emptied his gun and nothing fell! He looked at us and asked if we shot at all, and we explained to him exactly what we did. He was definitely put in his place. We never had anymore of him claiming every bird, at least not for a while! We no longer hunt with him, obviously!
