The first thing you should do is try to hook up with someone who has been waterfowl hunting for a while and have them teach you the ropes, I don't know about your area but around here there are a number of sportsmans club where you can meet people with the same interest and who are always willing to take a newbe hunting

You can have all the gear in the world, but without birds it's all useless. Gain permission to the fields that you have seen birds use in the past. Location,Location,Location.

pitboss hit the nail on the head,HOOK UP WITH A BUDDY....
not sure where you're from but here in the columbia basin not only will it improve your odds for sucsess but winter on the water can be deadly.....
its alot cheaper to get into duck hunting and there are alot of public hunting areas.
there are alot of things we all think of as common sence waterfowling but if you dont have much expierence and either do your hunting partners a pit or a duck blind can be the most dangerous of hunting situations.we lose a couple waterfowl hunters a year and a couple years back there was 5 deaths ............it makes you think about what you're doing out there.
SO FIND A GOOD OLD WATERFOWL MENTOR TO GET YOU UP TO SPEED....

NO. 1...........Find the birds.

Then its easy to get someone with knowledge to go with you and show you the ropes
