I am looking into getting my first duck call, would like to start out simple like I did with my goose call(meatgrinder) What would you guys recomend? I will be hunting a little of everything, flooded timber, open fields, marsh act. Gonna be getting some duck decoys this year as well. I have simply fell in love with waterfowl after last year! Man I wish I hadnt waited so long to try this out! Thanks for the help guys!

If money is not a problem I would go w/ the DMM. Very versitle call. It can get loud over open water or soft in timber/marshes. If your looking for something a little cheaper the Legend is an awesome call!!!!! One other thing is to just go into stores and give them a test drive and see which one fits your style. Hope this helps!
buy an acrylic call and if you dont like it, you can trade it for something else. Dont go cheap

For a starter call...I would honestly recommend a wood/poly double reed Legend. The call is easy to make to good duck sounds on for a beginner and will have enough volume to hunt some open fields, marshes, swamps etc. Personally, I love this call and I never leave home to hunt ducks without it!!! I think you are looking at like $50 or so for wood/poly version of the Legend.
Now..if you are looking for an acrylic or wood/acrylic...take a serious look at the Timber Rattler and Dead Meat Mallard calls. These you will have to blow for yourself to see which call fits you better and has a better sound to you.

The best call I can think of would be the DMM if money is no issue that is about the most versital call there is. Otherwise the legend is a great soundin call and cheaper also cant go wrong with any of them.

Is it easiere to start with a single reed or a double reed duck call?
Theres so very little differance between the two that most people wouldnt even notice, the single tends to be louder and not as soft whereas the double is softer and not as loud. If you want something for an all around call go with the double reed, both the TR's and DMM's either in single or double will get the job done very well, a little word of advise when you decide to buy, if you go with the double get the single setup with it so you can run it both ways to suit your needs.

I may look into the legend to start off with, still trying to buy some duck decoys for the year as well as add to my goose spread!

I'd take a look at the legend or the Strait Suzy in poly when ever it comes out.
