What I mean is this . . .

Is a longer reed, faster, higher pitched, easier to blow? Let's say that I wanted a call tuned light and easy, how would the reed and guts be positioned, further into the insert; further out? What about the 'exposure' between the reed and tone board?

What about tuning for a slower and lower call?

The further you have the guts and reed out, the more deeper/slower the call will be. The more you have them crammed in the endpiece, the more high pitched it will be. Somewhere in between the 2 is where you would want yours for light and easy. As far as the gap between the reed and the end of the tone channel, it needs to be as close as possible to the end without hitting or "sticking" on the tone channel when it dips down. You can do this simply by pushing down on it before you put the call back together. If you hear a popping sound or if you see too much space between the reed and the end of the tone channel start over. This is probably the most critical part in tuning a call. You will get to notice if you have it set right because you will be able to tell if you are losing air by too much gap between the tip of the reed and tone channel.

I'll share what I know, which isn't much, a shorter reed is easier to blow (less air) and is higher pitched and faster, a longer reed is harder to blow (more air) and is lower pitched and slower. I hope that is of some use. As far as the position of the tone board, good luck! Small adjustments and keep tinkering till you get it. Once you get it close or you do get it, mark the position of the reed and tone board in the insert with a sharpie or permanent marker for reference. Good luck, it is not an easy thing tuning a short reed goose call.

I am no expert.. and when tuning my goose call, ill mess with it for a little bit, then blow a "hail call".. it seems that once you can hit the "hail call" you can make any other sounds... you should always be able to hail on the short reed, and if you cant hit that... just keep messin w. it. Takes time to get it how you like it but its worth it!!
