Hey guys, I might have a problem. I have a 7 month old lab that I'm training and she's doing extremely well, but the other day I started introducing her to the actual shotgun, not the noise, just the gun and she acted real skiddish around it. I've already introduced her to gunfire with blanks from my starter gun. But what should I do if she's afraid of the gun itself?

Start by having someone shoot from a distance and every day get closer and closer. Before long she will Not have a problem with it. Also dont rush things. If this was the first time you have ever used a gun around her then she will probibly be scared because most puppies are scared or cautious of new things.

get the gun out more often. Dogs are conditioned trained so they will get used to it. Also get it out and lay it on the table in the livingroom and play with her in there or do the same outside. set it in the corner where she eats. seems like she just needs to see it more.

Sounds like pretty righteous advice there. I honestly didn't know what to say when I read this thread.

Mine was scared of the gun as well, and she was 2 years old when I got her. I did just as Richie said, keep the gun around the dog when she's eating, or when she gets praise....praise her around the gun, and treat her just as you would train her to "come" or stay. Your dog will be good around the gun in no time.
GOOD LUCK

i have my 2 dogs and both on the opposite end with this. My shorthair instantly runs out back and plants his nose to the ground to find birds and my lab when i get out the gun just lays there like oh not this again. Oh yeah, my lab doesnt like guns but everything else he does with hand signals. Go figure, would be an excellent dog but just cant break him of guns no matter what. Oh well thats why i have a boat i guess.

Richie, if i shoulder the gun he follows the barrel and that gets him in the right area for when i take a shot.

I would have lost a few doves and pheasants if it wasnt for my guy. He actually tracks them after the shot better than i do. Plus like any good dog, he can sniff em out if we both lose track. I lost a bird once and was looking for it for about 15 minutes and he followed me around the whole time which made me mad but i didnt notice he already found the bird and was trying to give it to me.
