I was thinking about buying a couple of spinning wing dekes for mallards in fields and was wondering if they scare off geese or do they help attract them also?

In my experience, I don't like the spinning wings in my goose spread. All you want to do is get there attention whether flagging or using a spinning wing, and turn them to you. Then let you're calling (or lack of sometimes)and decoying work for you. Up close I think the spinning wings flare them off. If you do use spinning wings, use them to your advantage as to above, set your mallards off behind you and to the upwind side, and your goose spread around and in front of you (seperate from the ducks), and if you let your spinning wing on, as the geese come in to your spread, they won't want to go over the ducks and they will flare over down wind to where you're set up. Does that make sense to you? We personally don't use them, unless we know we are going to be shooting ducks also. Also if you get one, get the Mojo with the multi-cycle remote, it will run for 5 seconds, then shut off for 5 or 10 sec. then run again for 5 sec. I think it is the most effective anymore, the constant on is alot of times to much, especially in open situations. At least get a remote on/off decoy.

In my experiences hunting with spinning wing dekes in mixed bag hunts the spinners flair the geese, and usually the ducks would decoy into the geese decoys anyways, so I don't use spinners when hunting geese too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Do they work well in small sloughs also with only a couple dozen dekes.

Yeah, for hunting ducks I would definitely have one! Our usual spread includes 1 or 2 spinning wings decoys depending on the size spread. On cloudy days they are a must I think, on clear blue bird skies, if we put them out I usually try to downplay them a little, either put them into the cover a little or if you have a remote decoy, use it to get their attention far off, and if they turn to come in, then shut it down. Morning times are like cloudy days, just let them run. And always learn to read the birds, and give them what they want, it's not always the same. Some days you just don't want the spinning wing, the birds will tell you what to do. I hope this helps, again, get the Mojo decoys with the multi-cycle remote if possible.

This is very confusing for me because when you see all these hunting videos they use like 6 or more spinning wings in one set of decoys, for geese and ducks. Most of our goose hunting is done on the water and i have called in some small flocks form up high when we had two WIND DUKS out they came right in. Other times they will flare. As far as feild hunting goes i dont get to do much of that but if i did i would be checking out one of those POWER FLAPPER decoys for ghg. He will open his wings for ten seconds flap them like a goose that is streching and then close them. you can set between 3 different modes i think.
As far as using for ducks we sat in a blind one day with 2doz dekes and watched over 300-400 birds get with in 200 yards and i have never seen birds flare so hard. Maybe it was because of late season i dont know, maybe because of being in the afternoon. I know one thing they sure as heck didn't see us or the blind. But i have seen them work, but i don't know just my 2 cents. I haven posted in a while so felt like talking.

My experience is when gees get too close thye will flare off of them. I have a remote to my Lucky Duck so I can run it and turn it off when geese come.
