What are "ranges" of the different patternmasters available? I bought a "standard, long range" pattenmaster off of a 'fuge member. What is the effective range of this particular choke, if you will? I also seen that they have a "short" range, and a "extended, long" range also.

I went on the new patternmaster website, and couldn't find an answer to my question.

Personally i think the effective Range does not come from the style of Choke you use. Yes it will have some effects on shot string, and pattern density, but the effectivness of Range comes from the weight of the shot, size of the shot, type of shot used, and size of shell.....oh and of course the accuracy of the shooters abilities with his or her gun...to me there seems like theres too many variables to say that a PM is effective at such an such range....

im sure someone who has used one of them for years can tell you the ranges that they have taken birds with them, thats your best bet probably for find a close enough answer to what your looking for...

sorry i couldnt be of more help...

The standard long range PM is mainly what people are talking about when they say they shoot a PM....that's what I had all season and it shoots consistent and tight. IMO, with the correct load you can cleanly kill birds at 50 yards....everyone can say they can kill them further than that and I agree you can kill them further than that, but not consistently....Hevi-Shot and a PM, I'd say at another 10 yards to my answer....maybe more.

I don't know much about the short-range, but I do know they call it the "Over-Decoys" tube.....I think they say effective range is about 35 yards. So the short-range probably patterns similar to a Improved Cylinder....except with the patternmaster you get very few "stray" pellets.....virtually all pellets stay inside the main pattern.

The extended-range tube is made specifically (but not only for) shooting 3 1/2 inchers. Since 3 1/2 inch shotshell wads are longer than normal wads, the extended tube length allows the longer wads to be ripped back so they don't have any effect on the pattern. If you shoot many 3 1/2 inchers, I would recommend the extended because it shoots 3 inch and 2 3/4 inch shells well as well. But the long-range tube that you got seems to shoot 3 1/2 inchers just fine....trust me. :D

My buddy bought a long range patternmaster for his gold and neither he or I was impressed. His fasteel patterned better with his factory mod than with the patternmaster. I've noticed that people with Benellis seem to be happier with the patternmaster though.

I know everyone is all about Pattern Masters and so am I but don't over look the Kicks choke. I first saw this on the new duck commander video " For a Few Ducks More." These guys have been doin this a long time and know what works and what doesn't, not saying Pattern Master is a bad choke at all because its obviously not with all the good reviews and research I've read about them. I one day plan to try a PM in my gun just to see if i like Kicks or PM better. The Kicks choke is about 40 bucks cheaper and gives you a little more information on their yardage for what each choke should produce or was tested at. I know their X-full verision says its good up to 60 yards. Now is this a reason to get a Kicks, not really, just my opinion. I've read stuff with guys saying they've shot geese out to 70+ yards with a PM. Hopefully this helps a bit.........

I don't have a lot of years into this sport, but I thought I was starting to figure it out. That said, why are you guys so hung up on taking these extra-long shots (70 yds  )??

I thought the sporting way to take them is to wait til they're coming in to land, then match the equipment (choke, shot size, etc.) for that particular close situation. No???

Won't an extra-tight pattern 1) blow apart a bird at close range, and 2) make it more difficult to hit a bird at close range?

Because I make my spread 300 yards wide. Not because I like it that wide or have the numbers to do it. But because that way when they fly over I can tell people "They were in the decoy's!"

Yes it can, and yes it does.

The way I look at these chokes (PM, WadWizard, Kicks.....etc) is.........

If you are confident enough in your shooting to throw a golf ball at a football and hit the target and efficiently kill your birds.........then get one. I've seen a lot of people buy these chokes and not be able to hit the IDS Tower laying on it's side.

I shoot the extended range PM. I like it. I missed about 15 shots out of a case last year. I'm thinking about changing back to my regular Mod. choke.

The choice is your's! All the constricting chokes out there basically have the same results and effects. Make sure you get the one that works with your style of hunting. Be it decoying birds or pass shooting at higher farther out there birds.

Short range for decoying birds. Extended range for farther out shots.

I like the way you articulate, Brother.
