hi i am new to choc labs i just got a 2 year old choc that has had a little bit of training and he is not really gun shy but i cant keep him on heel when gun is fired. he just bolts straight into the water not listening to anything i say. what is a good remidy to this? i do not have an e collar (should i purchase 1)???????
I'D RATHER BE HUNTIN THAN HAVIN SEX ANYDAY!!!!!
you need to reinforce the stay command during training when you fire your gun, an E collar will do wonders when used right with repetition and reinforcement of your command while training. Tri-Tronics or Sport dog are a couple good brands to use.

SHOULD I PUT HIM ON A LEASH AND HOLD HIM UNTIL I AM READY FOR HIM TO RETREIVE? OR IS THEIR A BETTER WAY
you can do it that way and when he tries to break the stay command give him a little poke. Personaly I'd have a friend help if possible so you can concentrate on breaking him of this habit when the gun is fired.

HEY THANKS ALOT!! YOU GOT ANY OTHER HELPFUL HINTS THAT WILL AID ME IN MY TRAINING PROCESS SINCE I AM GREEN AT THIS?
Pick up the video by Richard Wolters "Gun Dog" great training video, all the bases are covered from your basic training to force fetching.

don't just put on an e coller and expect him to learn when you burn him. You must teach him the right way to follow your command and then introduce the e collar as a reinforcement tool

My posts were meant as a reinforcement tool, not to burn the dog. As I said Quote "a little poke". Not dissin ya here brother 8)

one thing i did was put my girl on a leash and basically tie that leash around my body so she soon figured out when she took off she was jerked right back. eventually she didn't recognize whether she was on the leash or not and stays 99.9% of the time now. hope this helps.

It's not real hard to break your Dawg of Breakin' on the shot.
You can and probably should use a check cord on your Dawg for ALL training purposes. Just stand on the check cord when you fire your gun and when he breaks, he'll come to an abrupt stop.
Do this a dozen times and he'll soon figure out that breaking will not be tolerated or permitted.
If you choose to go the e-collar route. You need to teach the Dawg to "STAY" before you can even use the collar.
E-Collars are used to reinforce a KNOWN command, NOT for teaching commands.

I didn't take it personal Barry!!
Some people forget that they must teach the dogs the lesson first
Dake, thats true! sometimes though a little help makes them remember there command. I personally never train or hunt without it, they know its time to work vs play/work time and have had excellent results that way. also when I say collar he's right there ready for it to be put on and Ive used mine since he was 10wks old.

Before you just start using an e-collar you need to properly collar condition your dog. The collar is a great training tool if used properly (to reinforce what the dog has already been taught) If the dog is trained properly he should run the same e-collar on or not. Good luck with it and have fun. Evan Grham has a great series called smat work I know there are books and maybe dvd out now also.
