I have a SMH call that I took apart to clean and can't seem to get it back in tune like I want. I sent the call in to Foiles for a new insert/tuning a year ago and since have taken it apart. When I did, I made marks on the GUTS so I could be sure that it all went back right. The only part that I ma having trouble with is the LOW end sounds of the call. I keep getting a flat, raspy, rattling, BLAAAAAHHHHHH sound instead of a sharp, crisp honk. Please Help. Early goose season has already started in SC. :?

Did you make sure you put the correct side of the reed on the insert? The shaved end?

I made sure to put everything back the way I took it apart. I put the shaved end of the reed towards the end of the barrel, I lined the wedge up with the shave marks on the reed (where the marks stop), etc. I have even gone to Sportsman Warehouse and looked at their SMH calls to see where the GUTS are set/tuned. Like I said, the top end of the call seems to be great and the low end honks are pretty good. It is rolling from moans to clucks that seems to have that flat, raspy note. At first I thought it was me, but it didn't have this sound when I got it back from ya'll a year ago.

Ok, start with the reed on the sound chamber(shaved side up faceing the barrel) with the end of the reed close to the curve( when you push it in the chamber it should not click.) Now put the wedge on just below the or right at the change in profile of the reed. Put it into the insert. If you don't like the sound make small adjustments, untill you get the sound you wan't. If not p/m me and Iwill try to help over the phone.

10-4. I 'll give this a try. What you described is pretty much where I have the GUTS situated. I'm thinking that maybe the call is finally getting broke in. I'll get back in a couple of days. Thanks.

its been my experience that flat calls are largely a result of the reed tip not being close enough to the end of the channel. Ill typically tune em so that the reed catches and then wiggle the guts lightly to separate the two.
