The only way to name a dog is to wait and see its personality!!!

I had a set of pups out of Yellow male and a Black Female. I kept a Black Male and named him Benny. I also kept a black female and named her Nelli. Benny and Nelli....... Bennelli. and yes I shoot a SBE II.

I ended up naming him gauge. Fits him really well, I brought him home and threw a stuffed toy duck across the kitchen floor and he went and got and brought it back. Right then I knew I found my best friend. But is there any suggestions on what I should do or practice with him on not being gun shy?

Gun shyness is the last thing you need to being worried about right now. Work on obedience and "fun" retrieves.
Guns will be introduced later.. Congrats and have FUN!

I agree with J sheats on not worrying about gun shyness at this age; but there are some things you can do to prepare your pup for gun shots.

I have read to introduce noise to him when he is eating or in a comfortable familiar place and do it from a distance. You can use a training pistol and just walk around a perimeter and fire a couple of shots a ways out in the yard. If you are in the house; maybe just banging a couple of pots or pans together and see how he reacts. It doesn't have to be done at this age; but when you do decide to do it; be sure to make it a gradual introduction.

I am picking up my female black Lab on Sat.

Good Luck,

Winglocks, I had my first ever pup 6 years ago and bought over 8 videos and at least 10 books on how to train a dog.

The number one book I recommend to people when they say I want my dog to behave like yours is a book from Mike Lardy. The retriever journal did a month by month training sessions with him and now publish it as a book.

So much good positive information in there.

Get a starter pistol NOW and every time you feed him shoot it of in another room then bring it closer and closer to your pup and you will not have any gun shy problems.

I have a very very soft dog so it was critical for me to do it this way. If your pup is real aggressive you may not have to start noise training yet.

Mike Lardy's books are great. That is the program we use with the people I train with. I think the journals Hammer is talking about are Total retriever training 1 & 2, and go for around $25 ea. He also has a full line of videos and now DVD's
I think its www.totalretriever.com.....not sure though
