I bought a new SMH today at the Bass Pro in St. Charles, I originally picked one out in Blue and Clear, but someone had wedged the guts in improperly with the read hanking over the soundboard by about a 1/4 inch. I tried to fix it but they where jammed, so I bought the Bourban and Water, which I think I may like better. Being an old Flute caller, I was wondering if someone could post a pick or too of their SMH insert and guts, to help me make sure mine is alligned properly, so I don't pick up any bad habbits trying to make it sound like a goose. I won't be seeing my new pal who is going to teach me to blow a Short reed for a few weeks and I really want to start learning this call some.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have green guts and the sound board cuts the letter T (MEAT) in the middle. The Wedge is flush with the end of the mouth piece. My call is tuned a little high, hope that helps. If not I can shoot a pic later.

If your kinda worried about it try to find a pro-staffer in your area to take a look at it. When i got my SMH i picked one for the sound and the little air that it took and they switched it with one in the back that i had not ever even seen let alone blow (and their policy is no returns for health reasons) and not realizing it was a different one i walked out the store with it....someone had obviously messed with it because when i got home i went to blow it and it was WAY deep and wouldnt even roll over. After a day on and off of messing around with the reed i finally got it close enough and blew it. It still wasnt quite right so i moved it a hair (litterally a tiny bit) and it sounded so perfect....the prostaffers would be able to do this in a matter of minutes.....with short reeds especially a fraction of a milimeter can make or break a call from the perfect sound. Once you get it right....make sure that you mark the spot with a sharpie so if something happens you already have it very close and all you have to do is fiddle with it a little bit....i do this with all my calls. good luck!!

Thanks guys, I woild love to see a picture if you get a chance. I live about an hour east of Foiles Shop, will probably adventually go over their and get some help with it, the sharpie idea I have done for a long time with my flute calls, I have been tuning them for years, just wasn't sure what exactly I wanted from a short reed to tune it myself just yet, didn't want to tune it to me but to get it tuned right then learn to blow it right. Thanks again guys.

GDG, Thanks. that helped a ton. Still not quite where I like it, but it is getting their. I guess I will have to run over to pittsfield, to getit fine tuned and some advice. Then I will start working with the new guy at work, he comes from a different camp, but he is a previous World Open Champion, and he said he would teach me to use the short reed.

Thanks again,

I had some of the same issues you did. I called the shop first and spoke to Mark and he gave me a few great tips that I had never known before. Well of course I screwed it up and ending up just sending it in. The price for that is nothing really, and I added a few extra bucks to get it shipped to me next day. So.... My point is if you want something very speciffic, just send it to them with a note on what sound you are looking for and let the experts take care of it.

Thanks Oscar,
I am lucky enough to live closeenough to their shop to drive over and have it fixed in person.

Hey guys,

I just got my SMH the other day and have been blowing it pretty good but my green guts dont seem to be in the same placement as the picture posted. I know everyone will have their preference on the tuning but I cant seem to budge my guts in or out. I would like to see if I can get the call sounding even better and any help on adjusting the guts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

CJSDuck, I use a pen to push the wedge out (top part of the guts)....

Hope this helps, Bdoggs
