What works for me is: I watch the birds to see how many birds are working the area i hunt, that will determine how many i put out. If their is not big flights of docks i will only put out a doz or so. when i hunt large body's of water i use more like 5 of 6 doz. I usually hunt flooded timber or sloughs and only have to use 1-2 doz.
Hope that helps???
Good luck,Ray

Hunting ducks in the field we usually put the decoys around the blinds and in the kill hole along with a couple of spinning wings. As far as ratio I believe we have 2 Avery FB Harvester Packs, 1 dz feeders, and 1 dz Actives.
As for water spread I really couldn't tell you what a ratio is because it varies from what decoys we take out. I have a couple dozen of the Avery Life Size series so what ever the ratio of rester and actives are in that would be the ratio for what we use. Setting up on water we usually set up two bunches of decoys, one on the left and one on the right. This creates a hole in the spread for the ducks to concentrate to land in. We put a couple spinning wing decoys in that hole. This hole is not huge but it is enough to get the birds to work in front of the shooters and eliminate bird landing where ever.

rivers-3-4 dozen, bever ponds/flooded timber-1-2 dozen, can make small groups, horseshos, j's eveyone has their own prefrence, try to mimic, prior birds as much as possible to the location, and allways watch the wind related to the blind more than anything, make them hover 10-15 yards out, whether that means offsettingin the deeks to the right or left or even behind if may need.. but the wind will kil you more ducks that havin that extra dozen out..
