I have been out three times now and only found two of the gray morels no big numbers yet but I can already taste them. Let me know if you find some though.

Hey you guys, couple bits of advice. DO NOT use plastic bags or buckets to collect your shrooms. Use a net that will allow the spores to fall to the ground and make new ones. Once you get a path set, in two years you never have to look to far for them again. They keep growing along the path you walked.
Also, do not pull up the Morels! Pinch them off above the ground, or use a knife and slice them off. What you are doing is exactly the same thing as breaking a branch off of an Apple Tree to pick the Apple. You damage the underground plant of the Morel by pulling them up. You keep this practice up, and in a couple of years you will not have Morels in that spot any longer!

Sounds like a plan, might not be up till noon though. We need to hit the islands hard this year before anyone else does.

We wont start finding the little grays here in Central Iowa for atleast another 2 weeks maybe three and its prolly a good month till we get the big yellows. Usually we go by my dads plant in the front yard called a "Jack in the pulpit) For the past 7 years that its been in the ground its been 100% on the best times to find the big yellows...so when he comes outta the ground is when i'll start looking for the grays.

we found some red shrooms on the river last night, it will be a while now with all the rain and the nights are getting cooler. Last year we found around 30 lbs of shrooms, by the end of the month i was of them, beleve that. What are some recipes you use to cook them.?

Slice em down the middle, soke them in salt water overnight, dredge em in flour, salt, and pepper, then fry them in real butter. I am definately going to have to get out hunting for them now.

salt water soak overnight to get rid of bugs and crap. Cut 'em in half and give them a egg wash bath. Put some salt and pepper in your whipped eggs just like you would make scrambled eggs. Dip them in the egg wash then have a big ziploc bag full of finely rolled and crushed saltine cracker crumbs. Give them a good coat of the crackers then stick em in your skillet w/ a little olive oil in the bottom. Awesome!

Yep, me and Iawaterfowler hunt shrooms together every year at least a little bit. It seems that usually the 4th season of turkey season is the best time for morels. Which is about 3 weeks away. I think we'll start picking small greys in 2 weeks though. Good luck boys. I dont know if I like finding them more and eating them more!!

For you guys who are craving the shrooms now try this. Get a can of cambells cream of mushroom, mix that with one or two eggs and a whole sleeve of crushed up saltines, drop spoon fulls into hot oil and fry until golden brown. I think it tastes a lot like morels. It usually holds me over until I can find some in the spring.
