Does it matter which way you have the gut reed assembly in the call what I mean is will it affect the sound or any thing if you have the guts facing up,down.left,or right when you are blowning into the call

As long as you have the tone board facing the right direction in the insert, it doesn't matter how it is in relation to the barrel, you don't have to hold it so the reed is level in other words, it will all do the same thing, the pressure you build up in the barrel is still the same. Does that make sense? I always put the insert in straight with the writing on the barrel where it says SMH, just a little compulsive I guess. But when you're busy hunting and grab your call you don't have time to look down and see if you are holding your call level, you know?

With a duck call I do pay attention to how my reed and tone board are, but only in competitons. It doesn't affect the sound of the call at all. I always postion my tone board above the reed, if that makes sense, that way if there is any spit in the call gravity can pull it down and the call won't lock up on me. I don't know if this actually helps, but it gives me a little peace of mind.

Midwest, that's a great idea, I don't know why I never thought of that, but I will give it a try, you do definitely build up alot of spit and moisture on the comp. calling.

Jason, next time you are competing in a contest, just start spitting into your call and see how you do!
