Got the first gobbler out of the way for the year this a.m. at 6:15. Two hot gobblers ran in after flyin' down strait to my dekes out in one of our freshly worked up fields. Shot the strutter at 30 yards. It doesn't get much easier boys.... Where's my cameraman when you need him????? :)

22lb. 3oz.
9 in beard
1 in. spurs

Nice bird. I'm going to Tennessee next week. They have a very generous season: State-wide permit, April 1st to May 14th, four birds and if that's not enough you can hunt until sunset. $175 for a non-resident permit though. Ouch!!

lots of hens around i'm guessing...the bird I origionally set up on Friday morning had 8 hens with him...and he hit the ground and gobbled once because he really didnt need any more birds...the 2 that came to me didnt have any hens and came off the farm to the south of us about 600 yards or better and crossed a fense that they normally wont cross...they were gobbling like crazy though in the trees all around but like I said only 4 were responsive once they hit the ground....hopefully ya'll have some luck Tuesday big guy! I think I might try to sick one now since the rest of the season is iffy with innersquad games and prom and practice and school coming to an end....its gonna be hard but i'll see what i can do i guess

Got this bird yesterday. Not the one I was after, but it was a pretty good bird. It weighed 20 lbs., it had an 8 1/2 in. beard, and 1 in. spurs. What a great weekend, got a nice gobbler, caught a lot of crappie and bass, and spent some quality time with the old man. He never gets a tag, he likes to call them and scout the birds. Every time I've went with him he's put me where the birds are at.

I took out a buddy the last couple weekends to try to get his first bird. He ended up shooting a jake on his birthday with his bow for his first turkey. Cool part I got it on film for him.
http://www.hunt101.com/img/394536.jpg
Then the next weekend was our opening shotgun season. I called in a tom after fly down. He came into about 35yrds but on my side. I wanted my buddy to shot first since he never got one with a gun. The bird knew something was wrong and wasn't coming any closer. So I jellyheaded him. We still had alot of birds gobblin stayed at the same tree. In about 45min had 4 toms come into about 14yrds. He shot the biggest one.

The next day I took out another buddy and he shot a jake. He came running all the way in to the decoy.

You been busy brother! Nice birds, congrats. We got out foxxed by an old hen last Saturday, she came in and cut us off and took our tom! Dirty old bird! Going to go out this Wed. and see if I can get one. It's been a tough season here so far, They just don't want to respond to the call, and they're not doing a whole lot of gobbling when they hit the ground.

I caught up with my second longbeard of the spring season this a.m. I never heard a turkey anywhere on the roost. It was a perfect a.m. and you would of thought there was no turkeys for 100 miles. I sat for a little bit then decided to cut and run. I was walking back towards the truck and was at the bottom of this road that cuts though the woods. I called and a gobbler ripped off right up the hill..which means he was within 25-50 yards of the truck. I slipped though the woods and popped out at the bottom of this powerline cut that goes up to the field he was in. I called him right down the hill and jellyheaded him at 15 yards. He is a BIG gobbler for this time of the year...Here's the stats

25lb 1oz

2 beards (1) 10 1/4 inches (2) 7 inches (one really long hair is all it takes :) )

3/4 in. spurs

Here's a couple pics...

I am hoping to get out this Saturday....but, as always, it will depend on Baseball. I could have gotten out last Saturday, but I HAD to get caught up on yard work....raking (pine needles), mowing, weed eating, Round-Up application, lime the back yard, and get things ready to apply the fertilizer after our first rain this week. Only took me about 10 hours....so, my day was shot.

Hoping to get after them this Saturday.....first bird with a beard is getting pounded - jake or not!

If you kill one..we found a new way to eat the breast. Cut the breast filets w/ no skin up into chicken nugget/strip size pieces. Put a little salt and pepper on them, then dump them into a bowl full of Andy's chicken seasoning. Also add a little flour to the chicken seasoning. Throw 'em in the fry daddy and i'm tellin' ya... they're awesome! Anyway..i'll holler at u tonight.
