View Full Version : lay out blinds
have been hunting waterfowl out of snow sled and covering up with burlap in bean field , stalks in stubble , and sheets in snow . looking to buy lay out blind. have lab , and was looking at the otter blind with dog door in end. have never hunted out of one or seen one out of the box at the store. can anyone tell me if the blind with dog door even has enough room for a dog ? and also any ideas on which brand to buy, most features, ez to use and set up , built for left hander as well as right, dont know much about them other then they look awsome when camoed with natural stuff , thanks

I have the GHG GroundForce and its a really nice blind. It sets up and takes town easy and really fast and you can carry it on your back like a back pack and its really light. As far as the dog blind i'd proably go with the mut hut. A good choice for hunting low vegitation would be the Power Hunter. Its not a full framed blind but it works good in bean fields, short grass, ect. Hope this helps.

I bought one of the Otter blinds a year ago because of the so called dog door. Yes a dog will fit in but it is pretty tight quarters. The blind itself seems to be very narrow to me and I'm not that big. Not much room to move around when the doors are closed. I also bought a SUB for my son at the same time and it has a lot more room than the Otter :!: I'd say go with a SUB or some other blind with more room and get a seperate blind for the dog :!:
thanks im glad to get the help, i was really leaning towards the otter ,but never heard of anyone that had one. my labs 6 months and real tall. her father is about 95 pounds and the mother was 83 before the liter so id say the otter is out of the ? thanks again .

Your best bet would be to get a seperate blind for your dog for safety reasons as well as continued shots over its head will likely cause your dog to go deaf. I have a FA Express and love it for packing into spots, and its great for low vegetation. Next season I'm upgrading to a SUB cause I want something with a full frame and the other blind I can run as a spare for new people I bring out into the field.
I'd consider the SUB blind, light wieght and very comfortable. As for your lab, he seems to be on the larger side and most blinds would make things tight for the both of you to be in, personally I'd have him in his own blind. Some people think this is extra gear to carry, fact is todays dog blinds pack up small enough to be stored in your layout when going out to the field.
Hope this helps.

Go with the avery finisher or migrator. I have sat in a SUB a few times in the field and the bar that goes over your knees is low. on the finisher you can set it very high and it has a zipper and the end of the footbag for your dog to go out of. Lots of room to move around and its not as high as everyone says it is. In my finisher I get my blind bag, an extra jacket, gun case, shells, and food all behind the seat and still have 6 inches on either side of me. Plus its wide enough where if you wanted to put your dog in there you could have him between your feet because you have so much room to move your legs apart.

If you never had your dog in a mud hut you may have a hard time gettin him to stay in it. They are really nice blinds but my dog wont sit by himself he has to sit up or he'll walk out and go for a walk by himself. I bought a wildfowl blind it has two doors that open from head to toe. I got the big man one you can fit your dog, gun , and blind bag. Not to mention its really cheap compared to other blinds. Check it out I love mine, when I have the dog.
