If you really want to learn how to blow that call make sure to go up to Cabela's in Rogers MN. At 7 oclock Thursday night a meeting of the duck and goos callers of MN will be having ameeting upstairs in the back conferance room.
It is no cost and experts will be there to teach you. This month they are also having a expert tuner at the meeting.
It will be my first meeting and I can not wait.
Thanks

Yeah, I started with one a year a go in April. I now have 4 calls, 3 goose calls(SMH TS Meatcutter) and 1 duck call(SMM). Soon to extend my collection to 6 calls. I don't plan on stopping till I have every call he makes.

Foiles are absolutely the best calls made. I used to like Ground's calls, but I am all for Foiles now. I'm not bashing Tim Grounds calls though. They're great calls too. I just changed to Foiles. I got a SMM about 3 years ago and have only replaced the reed once. I bought a SMH in the fall of '04 after learning somewhat how to blow a short reed blowing on an Illusion short reed. I learned pretty quick. I have only been blowing a short reed for just over a year and can lots of times bring those big 'ol boys right in with landing gear down (thanks to my SMH). Derek, how awesome is your TS? Ohh man i want one so bad. My uncle has one and it works on those super wary snows sometimes when the e-caller wont!! And he can sound just like a speck on his too. He's awesome on all types of calls though.

That TS is awsome. Infact I was screwing around with it on Saturday and ended up callin two Canadians out of no where. I guess they heard the high crack and decided to come over for a look  You can try it out on thursday if you want. Definatly get one while they are still numbered.

Ya I got $150 in gift cards to Scheels for X-Mas and another $50 to Sportsmans. I might have to get one before the snows start back north. Might use the Sportsmans money to buy some 3 inch and 3 1/2 inch BB's and BBB's for snows. I'm about out of BB's. Got about a half box of Fasteel left.

i have never shot at snows but i shoot 3 in BB s on canadas. i have tried 2 s on canadas before and u cant even penetrate the feathers with those. I like my birds D.O.A (dead on arrival) not crippled.

kingkilla - What range are you trying to knock down can's at? I have knocked down more greaters then I care to admit with 2.75 #4's and #2's. You know those ones that sneak up on you. I don't like shooting them past 40 yards but don't have any problems inside 40.
Not even penatrate ?????? How far away are these can's you are shooting at? Are you shooting them coming or going?

I have always shot at Candans with either BB or BBB. In 2 3/4-3 1/2. I find it easier to KILL the birds with it. The larger diameter pellet doesn't loose its verticle velocity as fast and the pattern is more consistant at farther ranges. I am with Kingkilla on likeing birds DOA! It seems everytime that I have tried smaller shot on greater candadian geese it seems to wound more birds and make for a longer retrieve for you or your dog. Everyone in our group this week has been shooting BB with velocities reaching 1550+. We have been thump'n the snot out of them locked up at ranges as close as 30 yds. I personally don't like shooting birds at far ranges because you do two things. One you wound more than you kill. Two you educate birds and they are gunna know that they can't set into decoys that close. We have Jellyheaded lots of geese this late season using BB at 30 yds.
It is personal prefrance but I am with Kingkilla, DOA.

I am with Kingkilla and Iowamigr8tor, I feel that a kills a kill, why not use a shell with greater penetration? BB's are the way to go when shooting those canadians. but if your looking for a good work out from goose hunting ( chasing the cripples) shoot 2's!

SPEED KILLS....I shot this goose at about 15 yards with my patternmaster using 3" 1 1/4oz BB Faststeel at 1425fps.....

3.5" BB winchester experts (cheap!) through a patternmaster choke tube ---- the only way to go!!

Seems a few here have never heard of shooting them in the beak? I prefer 2's myself for can's but again I don't worry about smoking one with a 4 either. Now if you want to wing shoot them, you can chase them all you want. I would rather just shoot them in the beak and be done with it. Penatration is only a factor if you are shooting them in the breast as they are coming towards you.
At 15 yards speed is not an issue. I have seen a ton of geese get killed at 15 yards with 410's and 20 gauges. Hey Iowa - It's late season, those birds have already been educated. Take em when you feel comfortable with them.

One word JELLYHEAD!
If you need to make longer shots then velocity is an issue with steel. I try my hardest to make every flock or bird that we shoot at a definate kill. I don't shoot at birds to shoot at birds, I shoot to Kill birds. Even an educated bird will come into finishing range if you give them what they want. Read the birds, change your spread, cover up more. If they aren't finishing change somthing. I might switch to 2's for lesser geese but still won't have the pattern as I would with a BB. We are still shooting Giants, there are a few lessers around but not many. My gun usually has 2's and 3's in for big fat greendheads in november.
Also 15 yds with a hard wind, speed can make all the difference. All it takes is the birds changing their wings a little and they are out. Not to mention that steel will be blown around in the cold hard winds of our late season hunting.

Geardowngang, I agree that you definately can kill big honkers with 2's and even 4's. But you're also right that u gotta shoot them in the lips. I normally shoot BB's or 1's at any kind of geese. But I did kill two geese with two shots one day with Jclasen0124 and they were duck loads (3 inch 1 1/4 oz. #4's.). Both those birds were killed within about 30 yards and were deader than a doornail. I still just dont have much confidence in 2's or 4's for geese though. I have heard of lots of people shooting them wiht smaller pellets though. Just my opinion.

I agree with aspects of all of these posts, I generaly shoot 3.5" BB's or 1's, at geese. I usually uses 2's or 4's for ducks and do vary between 3" and 3.5" depending on time of season, and hunting conditions. I don't take long shots nor do I sky bust. But I prefer the BB's for their velocity, pattern, and Kinetic energy. I am a decent shot, but occasionaly I do mess up and not lead a bird far enough to make a clean head shot, so it is nice to have the extra KE of the BB's to take care of the breast hits.
In the end use the shells and shotsize and shoot the distances you are comfortable with, everybody has an opinion, and no one opinion is the absolute right way. Shoot what you prefer and are most comfortable with. And most importantly, put them Geese down.
