Hey all, I'm pretty sure i want to buy a Call from Killer Miller's Unlce. It is a Foiles Strait Meat Honker, with diamond wood, an black insert. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of wood vs. acrlyic. Any help would be great! Also, i have , just started using a short reed, I am getting OKAY, got the greeting call/ cluck/ feeding call/ and hail call pretty much down!

I find that wood has a mellower sound to it, I like the way they sound, the drawback is they have issues with moisture, swelling and such. They are beautiful calls though, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at all. My next SMH will probably be wood, but first I need to get a MH, HPH, TS, SMC, and SMM and TR. MY plan is to have one of each

I have 2 SMH's in wood acrylic combos...1 is cocobolo with smoke insert and the other is green diamondwood with a smoke insert. I love them.. you get the mellowness of the wood barrel with a little of the crack of the acrylic and also you don't really have the swelling issues of the wood when you have the acrylic insert....
you won't be disappointed...good luck.

I also have cocobola/acyrlic SMH and have no problems with it. The moisture issues and swelling comes when you have an all wood call. Also have one of those, sounds great, just takes a little more TLC when you own one.

hey all, thanks for the quick responses! The call is diamond wood, with a black acrlyic insert. Killer Miller is on a hunting trip with his dad in illinois, and is bringing this call back, can't wait to give it a little toot!

I have the Diamond wood and it works great. Some will tell you about the problems with moisture etc. I personally have never had a problem. I have 2 SMH, one wood and one in acrylic and prefer the Diamond wood.

Just my personal preference and .02 worth

when I mentioned the moisture problem, it wasn't meant to scare you away from it, just to make sure you know it requires a little more care. I personally like the sound of wood calls. Like I said I wouldn't hesitate to buy the wood call. I bet it sounds great.

Yeah Jordan, I forgot about that. With only the mouth piece being wood, you shouldnt have any problems with swelling. I am going to grab the call when we go hunting tomorrow on the river. Hopefully he has it with him. But if he doesnt, after we have our geese (hopefully) I'll swing by his house and pcik it up. I'll try to persuade him into giving it up for at least a little under $100! I honestly think he told me he only paid $75 for it used though. Its in good shape too!
