View Full Version : DMM Question...size of insert

Well, I finally got myself a DDM (#1178). I was comparing my call to a friends new DDM he got straight from Foiles. I compared the inserts and come to find out mine it is a bit longer than his (maybe around 1/8"...dont have exact numbers). The tone board is the same length but just the overall length. Also, the outer diameter of the end of the insert (where you hold it) is larger on mine (again, didn't get the exact numbers but it is noticeable). I wasn't able to accurately check the bore of the insert but they looked the same.
So I guess I wanted to know if the sizes of the components changed at all in the DMM. I know the DMM just came out so I wouldn't suspect there being a size difference (at least one you can notice like I could). I believe my buddy's call is in the #2500 range.
Or, do I have an insert from another call? I haven't seen a SMM in person so I don't know if a SMM insert would fit in a DMM barrel. I know the TR is not a possibility because it is smaller.
What do you guys think?

i would guess that if one of or both calls are used then one has a differnt insert. not sure but thats my 2 cents.

I think he is asking if someone who has both a dmm and smm could set the inserts side by side and see if the smm is about an 1/8 of and inch longer.

That and to see if a SMM insert will even fit into a DMM barrel (ie the SMM and DMM inserts have the same outside diameter)

Alright alright you got me. Is it just a coincident that you said that or did you see my post earlier when I said that to someone else? lol

Got a reply from someone on another forum...sounds like the SMM insert is longer...and the flair at the end is bigger around. Looks like I bought a DMM with a SMM insert...sweet

I noticed the same thing with the 3 dmm's I had.I had a all max-4 ,flammed hedge, and all teal. All 3 had the right insert in them but they all are different lenghts. The max-4 dmm inset went in all the way to the lanyard ring and the flammed hedge only goes in about 1/16" past the wedge and the teal fits perfect. They all have a little different sound.

It's not the insert size in this case......it is that the barrell of the call was bored out a bit deeper than most. I have a Max 4 one that goes all the way to the groove for the lanyard, and love it, it blows real loose and kind of squeaky.......so thats what that is, not a shorter or longer insert, just how far it is able to go into certain barrells. Take the insert that you think is shorter and put it into a different barrell in a call that you think the insert is longer, it should fit about the same place....

I think I understand what you are saying. In my case though it wasn't an issue with how far it went into the barrel. When I compared my insert to the other DMM, the overall length was different, however, the length of the tone board was the same (which means both inserts would go into the barrel the same distance) I would have to get a picture to really show what I mean.
From what bck1006 said, he has seen inserts from DMMs of differerent lengths. As for the size of the flaired end, I dunno.
I guess I got what I got. I still want to compare the size of the bore of mine w/ my friends....if they turn out to be the same, then it should be a DMM insert (correct me if I am wrong but is the bore of the SMM insert larger than the bore of the DMM insert?).
EDIT** found this post which answered my question http://www.foilesstraitmeat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6289&highlight=bore+smm
