Well actually there is two different competition inserts for the SMH. The main difference between the comp inserts and the smh insert is the bore. The comp inserts are flared out in the exit end of the bore of the insert to allow for for air presentation and easier air flow. The biggest benefit to this is loading and unloading the call quickly. People refer to this as alot of different things. Sometimes i refer to it as "clearing" the call. A wider flared out insert will also allow the sound to be considerably louder due to less constriction of the sound and the obvious increase in air. Its my opinion that a larger bore in an insert also allows the sound to back up and sound deeper on some low end sounds. Just my opinion though. The difference between the two inserts for competition style calling is about 3/8th of an inch in length. The best example of this would be the insert in the Tundra saver compared to the insert in the Showtime. I personally enjoy the Showtime mouthpiece with a short comp insert. I have also done some work with the smh mouthpiece and a show time insert. Both are great choices and can give you some great dynamic flexibility no matter kind of calling you prefer. I feel for me the shorter of the comp inserts gives me more range. Both inserts are excellent choices for not only stage but field as well. Dont get me wrong though.....that smh can win any contest it goes to just like it is, and it has.
