Hey, Im 13 and about to go into highschool. We can choose career clusters and Ive picked 2. One is Natural Resources Management and the other is Research and Development. I dropped R&D because what I wanted to be barely made enough money to get by in Maryland. But what I really wanna do now is become a guide or open an outfitter service or do something with wildlife. I have two questions, 1. How much money does a guide make? 2. What classes do I need to take in highschool and college to be successful in the industry? Thanks in advance for the help

i dont know exactly because im not a guide or an outfitter. but i know that with an emphasis on natural resources managment you will be taking purely science and math classes. That stuff can be very interesting but it's a lot of work. And if you didnt think you were going to make enough money in research and development i dont know if you'll be satisfied with guiding wages, you can make what you're willing to earn in anything

Mike makes a couple of good points there.....I guess as far as the Natural Resources end of it, sciences (all types, you name it, you could take it), maths, biologies (of several kinds) are all part of the natural resource major. As far as preparing yourself to be a guide, I don't know how much a successful guide service makes, but I also know a few and know that guiding is something that supplements their main source of income.
As far as classes you could take that would make becoming a guide easier would be of value. You will not find TOO many, if any at all that will be specific, however public speaking, public relations, or any type of class that will help you deal with the public easier. But, personally above all, I think you just have to have the personality to deal with it, if you don't mind going out with a group of guys that know next to nothing about the sport you cherish and take very seriously, and are able to stomach it and manage the situation, you will be just fine. If not, you may have some trouble.
But, this is not saying you will not get great groups of guys and enjoy it a lot, you just need be prepared to deal with all kinds, and if you are a people person, you will be fine. Just keep working at it, and see what happens. Just my $.02.

To become a guide, I would recommend some sort of Business course.

I would recomend something in the business feild as well. Being a guide you only have to worry about keeping your clients and boss happy. If you were wanting to start your own outfitting business I wish you all the luck in the world. It pays to be very business sound if you are going that route. I love being a guide, but would not want to have my own outfit.

In my opinion i would be more worried about the ability to kill birds EVERY day, it makes for happy clients and repeat business. Running the actual business mainly consists of good advertising, doing a few shows and knowing what you are talking about. Knowledge of the sport is far more important. Last time I checked goose hunting 1302 was never offered in college

Goose hunting 1302 was taught next to the junior college I attended years ago. We were 3 miles off of a large refuge (for kansas anyway). In fact, I got an A in that course for 2 years. problem is the daily homework, classwork, and tests caused problems with what I was going to "school school " for.
In my opinion, focus on the daily harvesting of geese and be prepared to know what the birds in that area are going to do any given time. Know where you can find the birds, and learn some humility. With all of the unknown's and uncontrollable in nature, you will be made to look wrong in more then one occasion.
